Grade 9 Up—An outstanding tool. Chapter one, "Writing Ethics," discusses the reason for citing information and gives students examples of lessons from "real life." The second chapter, "Research," provides advice on choosing a topic, formulating a thesis, using the library, and evaluating sources. "Writing" teaches students how to compose introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions, and provides advice on making revisions. These initial instructions are followed by individual chapters on citing information according to the Modern Language Association (MLA), the American Psychological Association (APA), the Chicago Manual of Style, and The Council of Science Editors. Each chapter explains why one would choose that particular style and has its own index. Because of its abbreviated format, the book is a welcome alternative to the style handbooks produced by MLA and APA. While both of these publications provide excellent, detailed information for scholarly writers, much of it is not necessary for high school term papers. Compact size and a higher quotient of straightforwardness will probably make this book the first choice of many students and other users, even if they suspect they might later have to turn to one of the larger, conventional sources. The book opens with a chapter on ethics and avoiding plagiarism, followed by one on research, one on writing a research paper, and a chapter on each of the four major styles—MLA, APA, CMS, and CSE. Everything is clearly explained, and the writers didn’t shy away from answering “dumb” questions of the kind that invariably arise in the minds of first-timers. Cite It Right has given me confidence and peace of mind in my research as a writer. I finally understand all of the tricky guidelines that my teachers fuss about. Bibliographies and citations used to drive me crazy, but referring to this ultimate reference book has provided me reassurance in my citing. I know I will use this book through the rest of my college career.

Now in an updated second edition, Cite It Right: The Source Aid Guide to Citation, Research, and Avoiding Plagiarism is a guide written especially for students and researchers. Cite It Right spells out exactly how to give credit where credit is due in circles where being "by the book" in one's references and citations is absolutely critical to earning good grades, furthering one's career, creating a professional-quality paper, and avoiding even the slightest possibility of unintentional plagiarism.
