Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Dark and choppy, this 1.8.7. (a.k.a. Jordana) collection sounds like a temper tantrum thrown by a particularly hyperactive child. 1.8.7. specializes in drum & bass served loud, cold, and unrelenting, with touches of breakbeat and house music. The combination is hazardous to a club-goer's sanity, as crazed cross-rhythms, dub bass lines, and well-timed transitions inspire both tireless energy and flailing dance-floor maneuvers. Still, despite the constant speed and abrasive pounding, the music doesn't deal in Lamb- or Squarepusher-style off-times, keying on four-on-the-floor patterns. It deals in workable mix material and danceable grooves, like a pitch-black companion to records by DJ Dara and other straighter-laced drum & bass mixologists. On soundscapes like "Pittsburgh," though, such comparisons ring hollow, as 1.8.7. digs deep with creative pacing and samples to erect towers of music all her own. Throw it on the record player and prepare to stay up all night, like it or not. --Matthew Cooke

5.0 out of 5 stars Drum and Bass that will make you move!, May 19, 2001

Grafs (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cities Collection (Audio CD)
More great d'n'b from, arguably, the United States' best d'n'b producer, Jordana. This album progresses from her previous album, "Quality Rolls" in the sense that this is definitely a tech-step masterpiece, while "Quality Rolls" was a masterpiece of its own genre. "The Cities Collection" is quite similar in style to the self-titled standout track of "Quality Rolls." The album's opener, Hollywood, is a great track by itself, but it also plays the important part of being the lead-in track to this album's strongest cut, New York. New York has a very choppy breakbeat sound to it, with low, dark, driving basslines underlying this soundscape. About halfway through this track Jordana shows her mixing skills by perfectly matching a Digable Planets' rap sample with her sick jungle beats. This is the best MCing, live or sampled, that I have ever heard executed over a jungle beat. It's not surprising that another standout track is Pittsburg, Jordana's hometown. This cut, along with every other on this album, practically makes you want to get up and move to Jordana's implorable beats. If you like AK1200, Dieselboy, Krust, or Konflict, then you will love this album. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for driving, May 8, 2000

A great CD to drive to, but becareful not to speed. It ranges from some harder hitting beats to lighthearted breaks. However, i've heard that "Philadelphia" rips off Konflict Phobia. Overall a fabulous album.

Pics: "Hollywood," "Chicago," and "Pittsburgh."

5.0 out of 5 stars bomb drum and bass, September 24, 2000

This review is from: Cities Collection (Audio CD)
I came across this cd at Little Five Points in Atlanta in one of the record stores. Already aware of 1.8.7's reputation as a hard and dark drum and bass dj and writer, i was delighted to see the featherweight priceprinted on the cover. Without further thought I bought the album and was dropped into Jordana's twisted since of drum and bass. She seems to take a little more constructive and imaginative approach to d'n'b than the average d'n'b writer. the first track is phat getting the album started off with a an upbeat remix of "the phantom menace", then proceeds into pounding drum and bass that is always up front and rough as hell. the strange part of this album is that it isnt mixed, but instead the tracks begin instantly one after the other and surprisingly seems to mix in its own way. i won't go as far as to say this is the best drum and bass cd i've ever owned because at times it is easy to see where Jordana got some of her ideas (reminicent of deiselboy and ak 1200 on certain tracks), yet this cd is definitely worth buying if you're all about fast and rough drum and bass. one extra note: this pounds on car sterio systems.
