Dark and choppy, this 1.8.7. (a.k.a. Jordana) collection sounds like a temper tantrum thrown by a particularly hyperactive child. 1.8.7. specializes in drum & bass served loud, cold, and unrelenting, with touches of breakbeat and house music. The combination is hazardous to a club-goer's sanity, as crazed cross-rhythms, dub bass lines, and well-timed transitions inspire both tireless energy and flailing dance-floor maneuvers. Still, despite the constant speed and abrasive pounding, the music doesn't deal in
Lamb- or
Squarepusher-style off-times, keying on four-on-the-floor patterns. It deals in workable mix material and danceable grooves, like a pitch-black companion to records by
DJ Dara and other straighter-laced drum & bass mixologists. On soundscapes like "Pittsburgh," though, such comparisons ring hollow, as 1.8.7. digs deep with creative pacing and samples to erect towers of music all her own. Throw it on the record player and prepare to stay up all night, like it or not.
