WOW! This album is seriously going to blow you away!

If you like the singer of let's say "Unbelievable Truth"-Tom Yorke's brother's band, add splashes of the singer from "My Vitriol." Dark, modern rock sound. Band has not yet realized its full potential on all the tracks. However, several tracks stand out immediately. "Capitol" being the most dominant. This song is so good it will lodge in your head for the next few days. Other standout tracks include "A Theme" and "Writing on the Wall." Good bet that this act puts on a solid live show.

Some songs even mix in that echo voice layering which is similar to "Band of Horses." You know, that seemingly haunting voice-over. That should pinpoint the singing on the album. One last thing though, the singer of CITIES, Josh, he can even reach up to that high note sweet spot like Chris Martin of Coldplay does. That is fortunately a compliment still. The band's music doesn't sound like Coldplay though. What musical influences I hear CITIES taking their shape from are from other bands like...My Vitriol, Killers, Sparta, and that emotional side of Sunny Day Realestate. There is not a dud on this whole album-and I'm confident you will not regret owning it should you like all the bands named in this review.

Happy Listening...

4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated gloomy indie rock (almost) at it's best., May 14, 2008
This review is from: Cities (MP3 Download)
What an amazing debut album. If only this album made a larger splash it would easily make several "best debut album" lists. Cities came out of no where with such a unique style, taking the dark hints and moodiness of Radiohead, the catchiness of Interpol, and the headbanging, toe-tapping riffs of Queens of the Stone Age.

The first time I heard Lancer I was blown away and that eventually forced me to buy this album. Quite a few other songs also evoke such emotion, (Lakes is an easy 5-star song), but like another reviewer said, this band has a lot of potential and they haven't reached the max with this album. I eagerly await their sophomore album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid album, September 12, 2008
This review is from: Cities (Dig) (Audio CD)
I bought this album b/c I was obsessed with Interpol and was stuck with two albums (before OLTA relased).

Musically, it is similar - with less thumping drums and bass. Vocalist Josh Nowlan rocks it falsetto and at times has some Thom Yorke-ish flare to his style (but, c'mon... no one can touch Yorke).

My favorite is probably track 5, "OOC" but the whole album is pretty solid. I wasn't crazy about it at first, but now I listen to it a lot. It's good.

They're a little known band from NC, and I'm not even sure they'll release another album. (Plus, they look young as hell in their bio on their label site [...].)

Check this one out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flat out amazing album, November 10, 2006

From start to finish, this is my favorite album. Period. Best thing I've heard in years. I won't even try and explain the hows and whys - no adjectives will do their songs justice. It's hard to point out one song and say that's the best or that's their single. All their tracks could be all over the airwaves with every other band out there. Each have they're own feel yet all flow as one cohesive unit. I can't wait to listen to any other albums they put out. Keep it up guys.
