This review is from: Cities in the International Marketplace: The Political Economy of Urban Development in North America and Western Europe (Paperback)
This book is great for a student of Urban Studies. Savitch and Kantor do a great job of examining the similarities and differences among a range of Western democratic metropolises as they face the 'international marketplace.' It is a well researched book, clearly written, and generally well organized. I would have appreciated spiffier charts and graphs and such, but the meat of the analysis focuses on the place-specific histories of the various cities they analyze and the ways in which those histories interact with politics, economics, and technology to shape the position the cities take in the non-zero sum game of urban achievement. In that sort of analysis, weak charts aren't a big deal. Overall, the book is quite ambitious and, I think, quite successful.
