Dark clouds gather over the once peaceful landscape. Wild barbarians, lured by Catan's wealth and power, maneuver to attack. Their massive warships loom against the orange horizon. You must be strong! Barbarians attack the weakest targets, and the victim of their onslaught will be the player who contributes the least to the defense of Catan. Don't take any chances! Field your knights! In The Cities & Knights of Catan, you engage in the defense of Catan and compete to build the three great metropolises of Catan. Each of these magnificent centers are even more valuable than cities and are safe from the barbarians. You must invest in city improvements, which you acquire using commodities of trade: Coin, Paper, and Cloth. If you improve your culture, muster your knights, and enrich your cities, you will be the master of the great realm of Catan! Now five to six players can explore and settle Catan! The 5-6 Player Expansion for The Settlers of Catan allows you to add up to two more opponents without sacrificing ease of play. Requires ownership of Settlers of Catan to play. Dark clouds are gathering over the peaceful island of Catan. Wild barbarians, attracted by the wealth of Catan, sailed to attack the country. Fortunately, warning has given Catan time to meet the danger. The size of the barbarian army corresponds to the number of cities in Catan. Thus, for Catan to fend off the barbarian attack, the players must form a knight force as strong as the barbarian force. In addition to the barbarians, players compete to build the three great metropolises of Catan. Each of these magnificent centers are worth two additional victory points. To build a metropolis, players must invest in city improvements. To acquire these improvements, players must acquire the three new types of Trade Cards: Coinage, Paper, and Cloth. These cards can only be gained by building a city next to mountain, forest, or pasture hexes. For 2 to 4 players.

We bought this thinking that it would extend the game the same as Seafarers but it changed the game play so much that it was not enjoyable to play.

The added elements are knights to guard your cities which take resources to keep active. A new kind of barbarian is present which knocks out your defense based on what somebody else did with there defenses. yes, you are punished for someone else's lack of defenses.

There is also added refined resources like cloth which are spent on improvements to your cities, knight upgrades or on a new kind of action cards. These action cards are similar to development cards but they go beyond. They include things like spies, trade agreements, embassies.

You spend time working on so many different these things that game play is slower and easily more frustrating.

I've played Catan for a long time. About four years ago I got the Cities and Knights expansion, and I've never looked back. But I rarely found more than three other friends in a night who wanted to play.
The downside to that? I really liked the green and brown teams. They just added a more diverse choice for players, even if there were only three of four playing the game. And the four basic colors were getting stale.

That's when I learned that Catan was being republished in a horrible fashion; all the pieces were going to be plastic!
And to make matters worse, my local shops were no longer carrying the wooden editions nor expansions. I tried for months to locate a vendor for the 3rd edition, expansion. It seemed I could find the basic game's expansion, but not the 5-6 player one. And the one place that claimed they had one, failed to have one when I placed my order. It's nice to see that Amazon still carries some.

I really do enjoy playing the Cities and Knights expansion. It adds more options to the game than if you were to play the basic version, though it also adds more time. ~_^ And now I have my green and brown sets to play along side. The only downside? The expansion pieces are a slightly different color than the original pieces. But hey, now a fifth friend doesn't have to sit around watching anymore!

When trying to explain this game to anyone, it always sounds boring. That is, until you play it. We never set it up like the rules say which makes it super fun... and if you get rid of the pillager and just ignore the black ship roll but include everything else that has to do with cities and knights, you will love the game even more.

This game is addictive - we've been known to play from lunch till 4am. Oh, and don't be too nasty when you play or it's guaranteed to make you want to fight with the other players (which sometimes leads to a better game, and sometimes not).
Whenever we introduce this game to anyone, they too want to buy it. It's a must have for any real gamer.
