Gr 2-5--This title is primarily an album of glorious, full-color photographs surrounded by brief explanatory paragraphs. The strength of the book is its celebration of the city's diversity along with its discussion, brief though it is, of the history, religion, important places, festivals, and the arts. There is a fast facts section that includes significant dates, a map of lower Manhattan that is primarily a tourist-sight locator, a tiny quasi-map of the city, and a brief glossary. The index, unfortunately, is useless, containing numerous references to little more than a word on a page or a picture. There is also no discernible organizing principle. The captions for and placement of photographs occasionally have little relevance to the text, and sometimes the pictures do not show what they purport to. While discussing Ellis Island, a stanza from Emma Lazarus's "The New Colossus" is quoted, but neither the poem nor the poet is cited. Stick with Kathleen Thompson's New York (Raintree, 1988), Barbara Johnston Adams's New York City (Dillon, 1988), Shirley Climo's City! New York (Macmillan, 1990), or Jim Davis and Sherryl Davis Hawke's New York (Raintree, 1990).
