As a true manufacture d’horlogerie, CITIZEN integrates a comprehensive manufacturing process from creating individual components to a watch’s final assembly. It’s an artisan’s approach to watch making based on pushing forward the boundaries of technology and leveraging our experience toward exploring new possibilities.
One pivotal technological breakthrough was the development of a light-driven watch. CITIZEN pioneered this engineering innovation well ahead of other watch manufacturers as early as 1976, which led to the launch of the highly acclaimed Eco-Drive in 1995. Utilizing electrical power converted from virtually any light source, this extraordinary innovation changed forever the way watches could be powered. Eco-Drive eliminated the need to ever replace batteries, which made it especially beneficial to areas where such specialist batteries were not obtainable. This leveled the field for citizens of virtually every country to be able to experience unrestricted joy of wearing and using a CITIZEN watch.
The product development policy, “The Fusion of Technology and Beauty,” remains a constant motivation for us to merge cutting-edge technology with perfection of design beauty, which as a consequence inspires people to strive to be their best at any time.
CITIZEN launches a new campaign in collaboration with Wieden+Kennedy, Better Starts Now. This is the simple belief that no matter who you are or what you do, it is always possible to make something better — and now is the time to start doing it. We believe that better and now are both infinite, and that there is always a next ‘better’ and a new ‘now’ in which you can start pursuing it. It was clear from the onset of this project that we are dedicated to this ideal…not to the past but to the present, and all the way we can improve it. To help communicate this belief to the world we have created a new global CITIZEN brand movie, brand identity and brand website that represents out Better Starts Now philosophy.

Durable & well-designed
Easy to use
So far, this has been an outstanding watch. I ride horses and I do a lot of things that can be hard on watches, and so far, the watch face, band, and housing haven't picked up so much as a nick in the 3 months that I've had it. I am very impressed with the durability of this watch. By comparison, other watches I have owned have had a scratched face within 1-2 months out at the barn.
I have had to do a full reset on my watch, and the instructions worked well. The watch hands were off slightly when I brought the watch home, and after reading the manual, I was able to determine the steps and follow them step-by-step without an issue. After two months, the watch hands have not wandered again, so this was just a one-off event.
The perpetual calendar is a nice feature. Having rolled through a couple of month changes, the day is still showing the correct day of the month. When they say set once and never set it again, they meant it.
If you are buying this watch for the chronograph feature, consider carefully whether you need something more robust than what this watch has. As explained to me by the jeweler (and covered in the manual), the chronograph only counts up to 1 hour. If you need to measure longer than an hour (useful when horseback riding), you may need to consider getting a stopwatch or a different watch.Read more ›
The crystal is flat, not rounded, which looks great. The watch is "shinier" in person than in the picture, especially around the bezel. The hands and hour markers have a really good lume effect in the dark.
The case back is rather bland, just a generic Citizen Eco Drive logo, but you won't be looking at that 99% of the time anyhow.
Very happy to own this watch. It resembles a Brietling Navitimer for under $400 which I'm sure is no accident.
Anyways, this watch is sure to catch a lot of attention with the wonderful detail that was bestowed upon its design. The fact that the watch functions on solar power and on artificial light is an even bigger plus.
The build on the watch is great. The stainless steel and glass look promising although slightly flimsy since the watch feels so lightweight.
The only drawbacks I can say about the watch (and I won't get into specifics) are the complications one has to go through to manipulate the time, date and its other features. For example: To change the time you ave to click one knob until the second hand is perfectly aligned, then release two different knobs, then release the middle one, correct the time and then do another complicated set of tasks to return it back to original state to wear it. The watch even has a feature to correct daylight savings time. This process is part of the time changing process but requires extra steps. For a watch, it's beautiful and all but has so many features that it makes the watch extremely complicated to do simple tasks like changing time.
Don't let this stop you, though. The watch is definitely worth the price and time that could be spent on it and I have never had any problems with Citizens (there are 3 in my home). But as a fair warning, the manual will not tell you how to function with the watch (or at least my manual didn't). You will have to research the instructions at the citizen watch website. All I can say is if you get the hang of it, you have one insanely powerful watch on your wrist.
Now lets get down to the watch. Yes, I will be the first to admit the watch get's frequent admiring glances as it is a mans, man watch. A few minor points cause it to loose a couple of stars of what would have been a perfect time piece
1) . The designer for some idiotic reason has in my opinion misused the title of Chronometer. The importance of a chronometer is being able to read at a quick glance the time elapsed and especially the second hand. This is vital for precise timing but in this case with this very thin second hand it is not at all easy to be seen whereas it should be very easy to read to identify.
2) It only times to ONE HOUR !!! Obviously the designer never went out anywhere. I guess Citizen wants you to buy a genuine chronometer such as the Blue Angels watch but thats a lot more money.Read more ›
