This watch will never go out of style.,
By Joseph Nicolay (Spokane, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Citizen Men's BM8180-54A Eco-Drive Railroad Stainless Steel Watch (Watch)
I can only echo the things that have been already written. This watch is small compared to my inexpensive analog Casio, and it is very light as well. I did notice that the minute hand does not quite line up exactly with the tick marks on part of the dial, so if you have an obsessive compulsive disorder I would not recommend this watch. It is very easy to read; the bold numerals do away with the few seconds it takes to figure out the relationship of the hands to the dial, like a Movado or Nixon.
The watch has a very simple and clean look that a utilitarian would appreciate. The silver hands on the white dial can be hard to read in the blue light of the early morning. The lume is a nice blue/green that I can easily see on the hour and minute hands. The arrow on the second hand is illuminated as well, along with hour indicators. The mineral glass is thin compared to some of the more robust watch crystals out there, which left me with the first impression that it was plastic. The case and band are much shinier than the photo shows, to note. The day-of-the-week display has an alternate reading in Spanish if the wearer so chooses. I had to remove two links from the watch band for my 7.5 inch wrists. The side of the band makes a pretty clean 90 degree angle that can cause some discomfort. I think the SS Railroad is a fantastic watch for the purpose of telling time. -------------- Update ----------------- I've owned the watch for a year now and it has been through a full home remodel with all the demolition, swimming in lakes and rivers to a maximum depth of only 15 feet, and operating equipment that vibrates excessively (professional string-trimmer and sledgehammer). I even smacked the crystal face on the side of a cement slab with no breakage or scratches; which probably has more to do with luck than durability. The steel band has acquired numerous scratches on the sides and bottom. As for the comfort, the band does not bother me as I once thought it would. I've had to roll the days forward in months that have less than 31 days, and the watch was within the actual minute of my computer's clock before resetting it for day light-savings time. The bottom line is that I would buy this watch again hands down if it broke today.

Eco-drive railroad stainless steel BM8189-54A came in 2 days. The wrist band is all stainless steel, and clearly of superior quality and workmanship. The watch worked perfectly right out of the elegantly packaged box. It is beautiful and just the right size and weight - tho the band was too large and I had 2 links taken about for 5 bucks at a jewelers. A beautiful beautiful watch!!!!!!!

This is a very accurate and good looking watch and is very easy to read in dim light. I can't say the same for reading it in full sunlight, the white hands on a white dial become a little difficult for over 50 eyes.

Great watch that needs no battery. It's a Citizen !. I really love this watch for it has a simple look -- dark black Hindi-Arabic numbers on a white face. The red 24hrs markers and red arrow of the second-hand are real beauties!. The stainless steel is thin, not clunky at all, so it is not heavy but light. The shiny band is a fold overclapse (no double safety clapse -- as in the Citizen Promaster lines). The time keeping is punctually accurate to run the schedules of the metro(train) commuting.
"Railroad Approved" --Every time I look at the face of this watch, I know I've own a piece of the history of the of Americana. Search on the internet to read more on "What is a railroad watch" ? You will find it'll take you back to Cleveland, Ohio during the railroad boom in April 19,1891. Thank you Amazon ! Proud to own this timepiece and its history behind. I will enjoy it for many years to come. Go Eco-drive!

Citizen Eco Railroad Watch from Amazon.com,

Ordered my Citizen Eco Railroad watch from Amazon.com 12/16/2010 and received it 12/20/2010. Love it. Had to have 4 links taken out as it was too big for my wrist. The watch looks even better out of the box. I was impressed. Wore it all day outside and now have it charging under flouresent light in the house. I retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad. I wore a Ball Railroad watch for years. After 40 years it gave up the ghost. Am so used to wearing a railroad watch I had to have a new one. On the railroad our watches had to be within 30 seconds of Greenwich Village time within a 6 month period. I don't trust anything but a railroad approved watch and the Citizen Eco was an excellent choice. Highly recommend it to anyone.

First off, this watch is much thinner and lighter than I expected. It sits nicely on my wrist and it's just beautiful.
Shipping was really fast. It came in the original packaging with all the appropriate user manuals and guides. The bracelet was too big for me and I wanted to warn all that don't already know that unless you have the special tools required to remove the link pins, please do not try to do it yourself. Take your watch to a qualified jeweler and have them do it for you. I took mine to Jared and they had it done in a matter of minutes. Just call in advance and ask if they do this for watches not purchased from their store. I know Jared does it for about $15 but I don't know about any others. The watch keeps flawless time and is easy to set and read. I haven't had any issues reading the time as others have complained in bright environments. The white on white is not quite as bad as people make it out to be. The hands have a silver outline and the color inside the hands is more of a pearl so the hands are easy to distinguish from the white background in my opinion. I also noticed another reviewer mention he was disappointed with the second hand not landing directly on the markers and although mine seems to do the same thing, the gap is so slight I doubt most would even notice. I wouldn't have even thought about it if I didn't read it from the other reviewer. My only complaint so far is the material on the hands and dots outside the numbers glow in the dark. It's a wonderful feature and looks great for the first few moments after the lights go out but fades away quickly. Within about a minute or less the dots around the numbers go out and a few minutes later the hands die out as well. I wish it lasted longer. This is a gorgeous watch and I've received a number of compliments since I started wearing it.

Great watch that keeps very accurate time....but be sure to give it sufficient light the first time you charge it up...I didn't and found out why the manual encourages proper charging.
One note....I had been told that it was a solid stainless steel watch band. ..which I prefer. That wasn't entirely true, the center links are folded stainless steel. But it still has a hefty feel to it and appears like it will provide long life to it's owner. I can definitely recommend the watch as a precise and accurate time piece!

I'm very happy with the eco-drive Citizen railroad watch. It seems to keep time very well and I'm delighted to know that I don't have to replace the battery every year or so. A nice watch and only a little more than a similar battery operated quartz watch which I've had 10+ years; also a stainless Citizen railroad watch.

Lovely watch, solid metal workmanship, fits nicely on the wrist. The face is clear and easy to read, with big hands. The eco-drive feature is nice, getting rid of the need to use batteries entirely. All in all, very classy, a great match with business casual.

I've got no complaints about the watch at all so far. I was a little concerned that the band didn't have a locking clasp like my previous watch did (a Wenger with a stainless steel band), but so far the clasp on this band hasn't given me any trouble with unlocking when I don't want it to. Although I haven't done any precise tests, it seems to keep great time. It arrived before Christmas, and was a gift from my folks, so after charging it up by leaving it out on my nightstand (not in direct sunlight even), I put it back in the box. It was still running more than a week later when I took it out again. The luminescent hands and markings show up fine in the dark (even on the second hand). Nothing bad to say about it at all at this point.
