Product Description

Embrace the effortless style that comes with a Citizen Eco-Drive watch. Imaging never having to worry about winding a watch or making sure it has a functional battery. The perfect everyday timepiece that rarely requires your attention, wearing an Eco-Drive allows you to turn your attention to the more important things in life.

Since its foundation in 1930, CITIZEN has promoted a multi-cultural mindset that fosters excellence and creativity. The very name of the brand conveys a deep respect toward craftsmanship and considered as familiar by citizens the world-over. So as a “citizen” of the world, we bear the responsibility to help cultivate a culture of positive change and on-going evolution through our craft. We take that mission seriously and steadfastly welcome what the future may bring.

As a true manufacture d’horlogerie, CITIZEN integrates a comprehensive manufacturing process from creating individual components to a watch’s final assembly. It’s an artisan’s approach to watch making based on pushing forward the boundaries of technology and leveraging our experience toward exploring new possibilities.

One pivotal technological breakthrough was the development of a light-driven watch. CITIZEN pioneered this engineering innovation well ahead of other watch manufacturers as early as 1976, which led to the launch of the highly acclaimed Eco-Drive in 1995. Utilizing electrical power converted from virtually any light source, this extraordinary innovation changed forever the way watches could be powered. Eco-Drive eliminated the need to ever replace batteries, which made it especially beneficial to areas where such specialist batteries were not obtainable. This leveled the field for citizens of virtually every country to be able to experience unrestricted joy of wearing and using a CITIZEN watch.

The product development policy, “The Fusion of Technology and Beauty,” remains a constant motivation for us to merge cutting-edge technology with perfection of design beauty, which as a consequence inspires people to strive to be their best at any time.

CITIZEN launches a new campaign in collaboration with Wieden+Kennedy, Better Starts Now. This is the simple belief that no matter who you are or what you do, it is always possible to make something better — and now is the time to start doing it. We believe that better and now are both infinite, and that there is always a next ‘better’ and a new ‘now’ in which you can start pursuing it. It was clear from the onset of this project that we are dedicated to this ideal…not to the past but to the present, and all the way we can improve it. To help communicate this belief to the world we have created a new global CITIZEN brand movie, brand identity and brand website that represents out Better Starts Now philosophy.

I like this watch a lot. For the price range you can't beat it. It blends ruggedness, style, performance and practicality very well so I can use it in almost any situation. The fact that it is solar is a big plus for me because I hate reaching for a watch when I'm getting dressed and realizing it is out of batteries. I picked it up for $236 from Amazon, which was a great deal.

UPDATE 6 months later: I thought the nylon band would get softer and form to my wrist better as it is pretty stiff. This has not happened so I bought a $20 black leather band with white stitching for the watch. It looks even better and is much more comfortable. I still give this watch a 5 start but you may want to consider switching out the band for something that forms better to your wrist.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

Why I like it:

Stylish without being flashy. The all-black look is a bit 'navy seals' but there are enough styling cues to make it look classier and more "high-end rugged" than the price would indicate (i.e. it cold be a $1,000 Swiss Army watch). Although it could be a military watch, you could wear it to a job interview as well.

Quality. Everything about the watch feels solid, the buttons have good resistance without being hard to push, and the fit and finish are excellent (not quite a Tag but you're also not spending $6,000).

Practical. Unlike some other chronograph watches with all sorts of dials and buttons, this watch has enough visual interest and a functionality without being overly complex or busy. I didn't want to read 50 pages of instructions just to set the darn thing. All the functions are obvious and easy to use without having to read the manual. Also, the hands are glow-in-the dark if the watch is exposed to light during the day.

This watch is quickly becoming one on my favorites. Solid Japanese quartz movement powered by Citizen's proven Eco-Drive in a nice-sized 43mm case. If the size seems too large for you, rest assured that the subdued black face and clean lines help to minimize its size on smaller wrists. The dial is super easy to read and the sword hands help draw your eye to the numerals/indicators. And the lume! If you get this watch, go into a dark room after charging the watch for a bit in sunlight or under a fluorescent. You'll be amazed at how bright the lume is. And since all the indicators, numerals and hands are lumed, this watch really shines (pun intended) in the dark.

With its nylon strap and sturdy build, I have a feeling this is going to be a nice rugged daily driver. The black nylon strap with reinforced holes adds some character and imparts a more casual and sporty look that I find quite appealing. I can only imagine what some nice 2-color or even 3-color NATO straps will look like attached to its 22mm lugs. And if you want to dress it up, the watch will work equally well in a leather strap and will be able to complement business casual attire.

The only thing lacking is a sapphire crystal, but at this price point, I don't think you can expect such luxuries. Mineral crystal is fine for daily wear - just be careful not to scrape the face on hard rough surfaces or drop the watch on its face.

Also, ignore the 2-star review. He was talking about a protective film covering the back of the case and didn't realize it wasn't a sticker.

I've been looking for a chronograph watch on a strap and this Citizen's fit the bill perfectly.

What made me decide on this watch was the eco drive. I have a Citizen's Air Diver watch which is also an eco drive. I love that the watches do not need a battery and are charged by natural and artificial light. Too many times in the past I've pulled a watch out of my collection only to find that it's battery is dead.

While I've had this watch only a couple of days I can already tell that I will be wearing this one often. I love the look, not too formal, yet not too casual.

Other reviews cover the technicalities pretty well, so I won't be diving into those details.

And yes, this is a real Citizen's watch. The logo on the back case is covered by a plastic protective sticker. Once removed, you can see the Citizen's Eco Drive logo etched into the case.

For the price this is an excellent buy.

I wanted a simple watch, that I didn't need to wind or change batteries and this was it. I work in heavy industry and needed something that would work all the time and could stand up to some abuse
So far it's survived without a scratch. The Illuminous paint lasts a very long time & is very bright.
The band is canvas and is very strong and steady. I will be buying another Citizen for my dress watch in the future.

This is my second ECO-Drive watch and my favorite. The black face and white numbers makes it easy to read in any lighting conditions, which was my issue with my other watch. The glow in the dark paint on the hands and numbers glows brightly all night.

One piece of advice with these watches is to let them fully charge (if possible) before wearing them at night. I bought my other watch at a local retailer and wore it out of the store. Later that evening I noticed that watch wasn't glowing and began skipping seconds. The next morning I placed the watch under a desk lamp and left it there for two days. I haven't had a problem since. I alternate watches leaving the other under the lamp in the evening.

I love these watches. They are understated class.
