Citizen
Citizen

Since its foundation in 1930, CITIZEN has promoted a multi-cultural mindset that fosters excellence and creativity. The very name of the brand conveys a deep respect toward craftsmanship and considered as familiar by citizens the world-over. So as a “citizen” of the world, we bear the responsibility to help cultivate a culture of positive change and on-going evolution through our craft. We take that mission seriously and steadfastly welcome what the future may bring.

As a true manufacture d’horlogerie, CITIZEN integrates a comprehensive manufacturing process from creating individual components to a watch’s final assembly. It’s an artisan’s approach to watch making based on pushing forward the boundaries of technology and leveraging our experience toward exploring new possibilities.

One pivotal technological breakthrough was the development of a light-driven watch. CITIZEN pioneered this engineering innovation well ahead of other watch manufacturers as early as 1976, which led to the launch of the highly acclaimed Eco-Drive in 1995. Utilizing electrical power converted from virtually any light source, this extraordinary innovation changed forever the way watches could be powered. Eco-Drive eliminated the need to ever replace batteries, which made it especially beneficial to areas where such specialist batteries were not obtainable. This leveled the field for citizens of virtually every country to be able to experience unrestricted joy of wearing and using a CITIZEN watch.

The product development policy, “The Fusion of Technology and Beauty,” remains a constant motivation for us to merge cutting-edge technology with perfection of design beauty, which as a consequence inspires people to strive to be their best at any time.

CITIZEN launches a new campaign in collaboration with Wieden+Kennedy, Better Starts Now. This is the simple belief that no matter who you are or what you do, it is always possible to make something better — and now is the time to start doing it. We believe that better and now are both infinite, and that there is always a next ‘better’ and a new ‘now’ in which you can start pursuing it. It was clear from the onset of this project that we are dedicated to this ideal…not to the past but to the present, and all the way we can improve it. To help communicate this belief to the world we have created a new global CITIZEN brand movie, brand identity and brand website that represents out Better Starts Now philosophy.

Pros: Titanium band, bezel and case
    Chronograph
    Solar Powered
    Sapphire Crystal Face
    Large face
    Luminosity

Cons: Date hand does not automatically adjust to months with less than 31 days
Black coloring may show scratches more easily than titanium without coating

This watch had all the qualities I required in a present for my other half. It's titanium, so despite the fact that the face is large, it's lightweight. The face is large enough to make a statement without being ridiculously over-sized. It's solar powered, so no more worrying about batteries. It's got a chronograph so that certainly makes keeping track of small moments of time during the day much easier. The luminosity on the hands and at each hour is bright enough to see in the dark without keeping you up all night long.

I generally like the Eco-drive concept and have a number of Citizen watches. All previous models have been sliver/chrome and this time I decided to try black. Watch, face and bezel are fine but the band paint, I honestly expected anodized aluminum or equivalent - something with wear resistance, began rubbing off with the first day of wear.

Took it to an "Authorized" Citizen repair facility within 30 days of purchase and was informed that Citizen does not warranty the band on any of their watches.

Lastly, the date wheel is behind the solar cell and is so deep it is virtually unreadable. On previous models, it is white with black numerals and is much closer to the face thus relatively easy to read.

Best to avoid this and similar models for now.

Citizen Eco-Drive watches are the next iteration of technology between battery and the more traditional winding or even "automatic" watch that relies on your body movement. This watch simply changes light (natural or artificial) into power that is stored in a special battery. What makes this so unique is that you get the benefits of a more expensive self-wind or automatic watch, but not the cost. Regular battery operated watches require you to change out the batteries every few years, which is a pain and if not done professionally, can break the waterproof seal and other internal components. Self-wind and automatic watches have no battery, but require you to constantly wind or wear them in order to keep them working through the ages (Note: these two types of watches, if properly taken care of can last for generations).

With Eco-Drive, Citizen seems to have found the best of both worlds. Properly taken care of, this watch claims it will last for generations as well (sorry, just got it, so unable to test that claim yet) and considering that the battery should hold a charge for 6 months at a time (when fully charged) I would say they obviously did a pretty good job.

But enough about the technology - let's move on to the actual watch. It is lightweight (titanium construction), elegantly designed, and easy to read. The sapphire glass (top of the line for watches) is clear and bright. Also, whether I am in direct sunlight or under artificial light, I don't see any glare. The movement, thus far, is accurate and hasn't lost any time yet (which some cheaper watches do within the first few weeks of ownership). The band, which came larger than I needed, was easy enough to shorten and well-constructed.

This is a great titanium model and I love the eco drive aspect, but just wish that the black paint hadnt come off in scratches. The layer underneath is gray so you can definitely tell where it has been scratched from everyday wear and tear. Also the calendar is not digital so you have to reset it almost every other month.

Very nice watch (4/5 rating), but I'm going to dwell on the negatives since those can be more helpful in reviews:

Even though the watch lacks a perpetual calendar, you need not worry about resetting it for months with less than 31 days. That's because the date is so small and recessed so deep into the face that it is virtually impossible to see without the aid of a magnifying glass (NOT an exaggeration). This is certainly not evident in the photos and is a major design flaw - no other way to characterize it.

A major reason I purchased this watch was the light-weight Titanium - roughly half the density of steel. Yes, it is lighter than a steel watch with a steel band, but considerably heavier than a steel watch with a leather band. That's not Citizen's fault. That's my own fault for not thinking it through. If you want a really light watch then go for titanium with a leather band!

The large "second hand" does not work - it is stuck on 12! That's because what would normally be the "second hand" is used for the chronograph/stop watch. The actual second hand is in one of the tiny insert circles. I prefer the standard second hand layout

After buying the watch, I regretted not getting one with radio control - many available at similar prices. In fact, I just placed an order for Citizen Men's CB0020-50E World Perpetual A-T Dress Watch.

Here are a couple positives that may not be obvious: The actual color is better than it appears in the photo. On my computer screen the watch appeared to be VERY dark green - not quite black. It is jet black. Also, it is much easier to read the time in almost all lighting conditions than some other Citizen watches. I purchased the Citizen Men's AT8013-17E Eco-Drive Limited Edition World Chronograph Dress Watch. It is a beautiful watch but can be difficult to read the time under some lighting conditions unless turned at just the right angle.

Hope my review helps some of you.
