Book Description

June 14, 2011
"What compels life without a soul?" Comics legends Gilbert (Palomar, Luba, Speak of the Devil) and Mario (Mister X, Me for the Unknown) Hernandez join forces to present a bizarre, sexy view of the future! Twenty years ago, the most famous, lifelike robot in the world was engulfed in scandal, arrested, and deactivated. Since then, an antirobot movement has developed, while body modification is in and prosthetic limbs have become hot black-market items. Stories like these are the stock in trade of gossip blogger Sergio Bauntin, whose startling revelations earn him the constant scrutiny of both the mob and the city's mysterious investigators, the Truth Takers. When Sergio catches wind of sightings of the long-missing robot celebrity CTZ-RX-1, all of these interests will collide in violence and intrigue. This handsome hardcover collection also features a new cover by Gilbert, sketches and behind-the-scenes material from Mario, and a special pinup from third Hernandez brother Jaime (Locas, The Education of Hopey Glass)!

4.0 out of 5 stars A moving story August 24, 2011
Format:Hardcover
ARC provided by netGalley

This story beings with a pair of missing shoes and a damaged robot. Set in a dystopian future where man and robots live together, true AI's are feared, and body modification is in---a robot appears on the horizon. The first true AI, Rex,--the one to show signs of natural behavior, the best of them all, the one that vanished after having a public affair--has returned out of hiding. And now three different groups, including the mob, are after him. But what's Rex's true game? And how far does the AI really go?

In this page turning and compelling story the Hernandez brothers explore just what motivates an AI to live and how far it can go towards appearing to be human. Although the story may have some similarities of Asimov's tale "I, Robot" it lives all on its own in a much, much darker universe. Many allegorical parallels appear in the story and the brothers leave it to you to decide which one is the true one and where lines should be drawn. The main characters are fully fleshed out from the moment that we meet them so that we instantly feel like we know them and what motivates them. Rex is probably the most well developed, but reveals some surprises as he goes along in the story and the tower that he spends his time around (with the word "why" written on it) will reveal hidden depths as well.

This story is drawn in the typical Hernandez brother style, but with a few unique elements. In some ways the illustrations look like old style woodcuts, with sharp, clean lines and hidden details. The overall illustrations maybe a bit sparse on detail, but each of the characters has their own unique recognizing marks and is easily identifiable.
