Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This book introduces readers to the idea of citizen science and then offers them a wealth of research projects to choose from. The first third of the book is devoted to explaining citizen science, why it is important, and how it makes a difference in research and the community at large. (There is even a chapter solely devoted to how the library can support those interested in participating in citizen-science projects.) The majority of the book is then devoted to a directory of citizen-science projects from around the world. Projects are arranged by seven overarching categories, including animals and outer space. Each project entry lists its title and website; a brief description, along with the age range for participants; the time frame for when it takes place (many are seasonal); the region where it takes place; and whether there is a fee involved to participate. A resource list of adult and children’s books is included at the conclusion of each section. A worthwhile guide for parents and educators, this book would be a welcome addition in school and public libraries. --Maren Ostergard

Format: Paperback
This book is a wonderful resource for parents, teachers, and community group leaders that are interested in participating in a citizen science project (collecting data for scientists' research). As indicated by the title, the book focuses a fair amount on getting families, and therefore children, involved in citizen science, but most of the content and the projects described are great for people of all ages.

The first third of the book provides an introduction to citizen science, offers first hand accounts from citizen scientists and project leaders, and describes the benefits to families, communities, and science that come from public participation in science.

The bulk of the book is a 100+ page directory of citizen science projects, divided by subject. Each entry contains a brief overview of the project, as well as details like the age range, time of year, geographic region, and fee (there usually isn't one) associated with the project. The directory also contains a list of additional book references for people who want to learn more about a particular subject area.

This is a well-written, clearly organized reference book jammed full of useful information. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in exploring citizen science.

Interesting, well written, and both adults and kids from 2 to 100 will love it and find something really fun to participate in. We need to challenge our children and find something fun to do with them that will also teach them some really great things. I wish we had had a book like this when our children were younger and doing science projects, but we will certainly do things with our grandkids.
