5.0 out of 5 stars Good quick read for Buffy and Angel fans.
I love this book so much I've already read it twice. Basically it's a novelization of the first Angel episode, with some flashbacks from Buffy episodes and Angel's past as a vampire mixed in. I reccommend this book to all fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the episode, March 17, 2000

While this book does contain the novelization of the first episode of Angel, it is far better. It explores Angel's past with vivid adventures from his bad days. It revisits the restoration of his soul. A must read even for fans who have followed the Buffy series from the beginning. I highly recommend this well told tale. Another excellent story by Nancy Holder

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, especially for newcomers!, January 20, 2000
By A Customer
I enjoyed this book, especially because I had only started watching Buffy a year ago and missed much of Angel's history. Intermixed with the novelization of "City Of" is flashbacks to Angel's past that fills a lot of gaps for newcomers. Unfortunately, the flashbacks may be distracting for die-hard Buffy fans. Good book, I read it in two days!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work by Nancy Holder, February 29, 2000
This is a great book. A must read for fans of Buffy and Angel. The only problem was a slip up where the author said the Drusilla changed Spike. (It was Angel who did it. A quote from the ep School Hard.. Spike: "You were my sire, man. You were my Yoda!") I rest my case. But it was a really good book, outlining the first episode with some flashbacks set it. A good read, I finished it in about 3 hours..

5.0 out of 5 stars Angel - City of, March 6, 2004
I really liked the book. The book is not hard to read even though if you don't speak english very well. It explains Angel's past to persons who are not familiar with him,and it also shows how he got where he is. It's actualy a lot alike to fist Angel episode but it has falshbacks from Angel's past. Angel and Buffy fans should definitly read it.

It was a quick read and did a pretty fair job of novelizing the first episode but it also tried a little too hard to delve into Angel's past. If I had read this book when the show first came out I would have probably enjoyed it more but now we're in the middle of season three and almost every 'background' sequence in the book is contradictory to what has happened on the show. Although it was entertaining to read I just kept thinking "That couldn't have happened that way."
I'm also not sure what they were trying to do here. They say the show is targeted more towards an adult audience but this book is obviously written on a 'younger' level. This book was well written but because of the inconsistencies I really can't recommend it to fans of the show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply put = its amazing!, May 19, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was a big fan of the Buffy/Angel love story and I kind of fell away from both shows when they split up my fave star-crossed couple since Vincent and Catherine (Beauty and the Beast the TV show). I basically stopped watching, sadly. I missed so much and will have to buy the DVDs at some point.

But I digress this is a novelization of the first episode of ANGEL and I loved it. It detailed the past of Angel or Angelus. It was well-written and simply yet convincingly written. I highly recommend it for those of you who miss the TV show.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful departure from the television show, May 10, 2004
By
While Angel: City of is a novelization of the pilot episode for Angel, the book is not just a boring, word for word write up. It uses the pilot as a basis for this story, and yes, a few clips of dialog are exact, but there is much more than could be aired.

Much of Angel's love story is given, painful background that lead to him having to leave. The reader is also treated to a deeper insight as to how painful that breakup was for Angel to endure. We were also given a glimpse into his creation (although this story differs slightly from the one that was later given in the television series) and we are treated to some new, previously unmentioned exploits of SPIKE and DRU, back when they bathed the world in blood.

The title of the book is Angel, so unfortunately, we see little of Doyle, but we are shown a tad bit more of Cordy. Still many of the Buffy/Angel characters appear, even Jenny Calendar, Willow, Darla, the Master, Giles, Xander, and more.

A worthy investment for the details that are included in the book, but not the television show.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book - basically a rehash of the first episode., October 3, 2001

ANGEL:City of... wont take you long to finish. It basically is a novelisation of the first episode of the ANGEL series with a few more historical tellings of Angel, Darla, Drusilla and Spike (well worth reading for these). The story was quite bland, hence all the historical padding. All in all though, Nancy Holder did a pretty fine job working with what she had.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very intense Angel on the prowl..., July 22, 2000
"You have no idea what it's like to have done the things I've done, and to care."

Angel moved to L.A. after his doomed relationship with the Slayer, Buffy.

"I can walk like a man. But I'm not one."

He dwells in his sorrows and guilt, repressing his urges to feed. His 'unnatural' condition attracted Powers That Be who sent Doyle to contact Angel. Their (Powers That Be) message were --- save Tina's life. But, he as a vampire, led Tina to her death when trust was betrayed after Tina saw his true face. Now Angel is determined to seek revenge...in a manner that reveals his old self.

This book contains lots of flashbacks of Angelus, where he met his sire--Darla, companions Spike & Drusilla and even the gypsies that laid the curse. A really great book that will make a wonderful addition to your collection.
