Editorial Reviews

After 42 hits with Smokey, the Miracles scored their second-biggest all-time hit in '75, Love Machine , with Billy Griffin singing lead. Here's the 1975 LP with that smash; the disco classics Overture and Night Life ; the controversial Ain't Nobody Straight in L.A. , and more. Includes a bonus instrumental mix of Love Machine !

5.0 out of 5 stars Serious Seventies LP June 5, 2007
I was eighteen years old and stationed in Minot North Dakota. I had three LPs. This one, Songs in the Key of Life and People Make the World Go Round. This LP is about the 70's and growing up in LA. It has a few interesting songs in it and was a great breakaway from the (Smokey sound) for the revamped Miracles. They have a great instrumental that is pure seventies and I use to pump it and open up my door in the dorms and drive people crazy. Enjoy the LP. By the way, I have it and would part with it for a modest fee. Later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whose Really Straight In Any Way In LA August 13, 2010
Format:Audio CD
An absolutely brilliant album and one of the very finest full lengh albums Motown released during the mid 1970's. After Smokey Robinson's departure from The Miracles there was some doubt that new lead singer/lyricist Billy Griffin would even manage to succeed him. Well as it turned out they had a huge hit in 1974 with "Do It Baby" and after that the band turned to producer Freddie Perren, the man who had spun gold for the Jackson 5 and The Sylvers to produce this album. Well aware with the success of Barry White,Isaac Hayes,Gamble & Huff and from within the label Marvin Gaye with his What's Going On and even Smokey's own Quiet Storm that important messages either social or romantic, especially if linked conceptually was not only reviving careers but was also tapping into the possibilities of cultural awareness and change. R&B,funk and soul was feeling this effect most strongly at this point so The Miracles and Perren came up with this album. Although somewhat unsung and unacknowledged over the years this album is a conceptual suite of sorts about life in LA at the time with each song covering a certain aspect of the emotional and cultural flavors of the city at that time. Overall the music blends both the fast paced, orchestral proto disco funk-soul not only of period Motown but that of Philly soul and the elegant grooves of Barry White. Along with that is the groups brilliant ability to harmonize and trade off with eachother vocally. Read more ›
