5.0 out of 5 stars I love this woman
Rarely will a book keep me up past sensible hours, but both City of Angels and it's sequel Angels Flight have done just that.

This book introduces and features Kit Shannon and a desperate fights against injustice. Now, usually, I'm inclined to favor the prosecution, but this book just makes you want to cheer for the poor and oppressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightly Surprised, March 13, 2005
This review is from: City of Angels (Shannon Saga, Book 1) (Paperback)
I picked up this book at the library with no expectations. I was looking for a quick read and intended on leaving it at that. This book wrapped me into the characters much to my delight. I caught myself staying up late and waking up early just to find out what had happened next to this wonderful characters.
Here's a quick plot summary for you: Kit Shannon is a young woman in her twenties from New York who moves to Los Angeles: the City of Angels to live with her aunt. Kit is an unusual character who has one pursuit in life; she wishes to become a lawyer. After quite a rough childhood, she has her college degree and has only to find a lawyer who will support her so she can pass the bar exam and become a legal counselor. The challenge is that Kit is living in the early 20th century in a world vastly dominated by men.
This is a great book that will have you laughing with the characters and cheering amongst your cries of dismay. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who believes in fighting for their dreams.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Inspiring!, May 22, 2002
This review is from: City of Angels (Shannon Saga, Book 1) (Paperback)
Finally, just what Christian fiction needed...a fresh time period (no more Christian "Westerns"), an intriguing story, and a REAL woman!!! Wow...what a rare combination. In 1903, Kit Shannon decides to move to Los Angeles, the one place she figures she might have a chance at living her dream of being a lawyer. Things are harder than she ever imagined...her Aunt Fredrica worries that Kit's less-than-conventional career will ruin her social life in the city, and Kit's having trouble finding an employer. But worst of all, she's suddenly forced to help in a murder trial...a trial where a man who has become a friend of hers seems guilty of murder. From the beginning of this book, I was inspired by Kit's deep faith in God and strong personality. I loved how she wasn't sickeningly perfect and was a real person we could all relate to and be inspired by. It was also wonderful that this was a Christian book about something OTHER than a woman finding "Mr. Right" and really showed a woman making a difference and NOT just being "in love." Last, but certainly not least, I appreciated how you could enjoy this book without knowing much about court proceedings. This well written book with a strong main character is a must-read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, A must Read!, August 29, 2002

This book was super. Kit Shannon arrives in Los Angeles, eager to begin her law career. However, due to the time period, she encounters several obstacles before she can find a job practicing her profession. While assisting her employer with a murder trial, she keeps a deep faith in God which is refreshing, and helps keep the story vivid and real. I'd recommend this book to anybody who likes historical fiction with a good inspirational plot woven into the story!

5.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book, January 7, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: City of Angels (Shannon Saga, Book 1) (Paperback)
I felt like I was reading a Christian based Grisham. This book had intrigue, suspense and Christian morals. It was refreshing to read an exciting book with an important lesson about faith. This was my first time to read either of these authors. I am anxious to read other works by them. I am also anxious for a Shannon Saga 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and captivating, August 29, 2001
By
This review is from: City of Angels (Shannon Saga, Book 1) (Paperback)
This book was very unique and intriguing. It was set in the 1900's in the city of L.A. and contained a little bit of everything; murder, courtroom drama, romance, and happy endings. I love Tracie Peterson and this book was just as good as many of her others. This is the first book by James Scott Bell that I have read, and now I want to read more. I can't wait to read the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book, November 5, 2007
This review is from: City of Angels (Shannon Saga, Book 1) (Paperback)
I really love Tracie Peterson's books, and this was no exception. I can't wait to read the next one. A little law and mystery was a great combination with her storytelling skills. I am going to look for some James Scott Bell books now, too, since I have never read any of his.
I am going to be buying this series for my grandmother, who is a Mary Higgins Clark fan. I think she will really enjoy them, and I can get her hooked on Peterson, too, like I am.

I love Tracie Peterson but with James Scott Bell, something happens. I couldn't lay it down. Just had to finish it before anything else got done. Great insight into the Courts at the turn of the 20th century. Can't wait to read the others in the saga.

5.0 out of 5 stars City of Angels, October 12, 2001
This review is from: City of Angels (Shannon Saga, Book 1) (Paperback)
City of Angels by Shannon Saga is not only a well written book, but very enjoyable. Saga did a superb job of combining spiritual with practical.
The basic plot line was the protagonist, Kathleen (Kit) Shannon loses her father at a young age, but is left with his spiritual beliefs and he will to carry those beliefs on. After going through tough schooling, including law school, in New York City, Kit decides to move to Los Angeles. Her aunt who considers reputation to be one of the most important aspects of life takes her in. Kit, wanting only to follow God's word and become a lawyer is eventually kicked out of her aunt's house for such a ridiculous dream. Because of her strong will Kit finally accomplishes her dreams.
City of Angels is a very inspiring book with the message of "I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me." Saga repeatedly gave Kit hard obstacles to conquer, but time and time again Kit turns to God and defeats those same obstacles.
Using a simple, but educated style, Saga explains the cruelty of life, as well as in the courtroom. Though Saga doesn't use many devices, she does used imagery throughout the novel to give the reader a sense of the time period. Saga also does a good job of developing her characters.
Overall, the novel was well written and had a great underlying message of never give up and trust in God.
