4.0 out of 5 stars City Boy on CD ?, January 23, 2000

WOW! I never thought I would see the day. I had always suspected I was not the only City Boy fan on the planet, but it sure felt that way. I have only met three people in my life who had ever even heard of them. The first was that guy who turned me on to them in 82. (Just after we all traded our 8 Tracks for Cassettes) The other is my brother, whom I introduced. The third, is me. Nice to see all the comments here on Amazon. I no longer feel alone! It took me five years to collect all 6 of the City Boy records. All from various used record outlets. The CD versions are a most welcome purchase "City Boy Lives!" Oh. My favorite City Boy song? "Moving in Circles" from the Book Early album. Peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars City Boy: Intelligent, Funny, Well Produced and Well Played, March 3, 2001
This review is from: City Boy / Dinner at the Ritz (Audio CD)
I first heard City Boy in 1976 and followed them to about 1980 then lost track of them. Their lyrics are very well written; enough so that just reading them off the liner notes is very entertaining. For a rock band they show sophisticated harmonic twists while alway remaining very melodic. They have a great knack for changing dynamics in a song and developing more than one melodic theme in each song. It's a type of music that's a bit quirky sometimes because of the subject matter or viewpoint but it infectiously makes you want to sing along. You might say intelligent rock with pop-like hooks. It's also quite well recorded. Their later efforts were really geared toward garnering top 40 radio play (but still bright and well written). I prefer the first album's longer pieces because they don't try to fit into that 3 and a half minute radio oriented format. I also enjoy YES but City Boy is more rock; it's intelligent music with great harmony vocals.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorite Mutt Lange produced bands., September 28, 1999

This review is from: City Boy / Dinner at the Ritz (Audio CD)
When it came time to get rid of all my old vinyl as I was building my CD collection, there were only 5 albums I saved - my City Boy collection! I used to use tapes of their music to "tune" the sound systems I was running for bar bands back in the Chicago area during the late '70's. City Boy under the production talents of now famous Mutt Lange, had some of the fullest sounds of that era. Great vocal harmonies, rockin' guitars, solid bass and drums, with wonderfully blended keyboard sounds. I can't wait to get the CD's and enjoy some of my best loved music from the '70's!!!

You will love City Boy more and more. I bought my first CD with CB in 1982 and I been an admire of their music ever since. No one knows City Boy in Denmark, and what a petty. My favourite album must be Dinner at the Ritz and the five others. Their music will last for ever and it is great that peoples will be able to get to know City Boy via Amazon. No matter what album you decides to buy, you will come back for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, tight and sometimes whimsical blend of rock, November 17, 1998
This review is from: City Boy / Dinner at the Ritz (Audio CD)
These guys are a fresh cut of Rock. Slick guitar work mixed with excellent vocals. They are a cut above the standard and sound as fresh today as they did in the 70's/80's

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best bands of the 70's, June 27, 2006

Thought I'd add my 2 cents to the City Boy "love fest". Starting with the "CITY BOY" album and through "YOUNG MEN GONE WEST", City boy was arguably one of "thee" very best pop-rock bands on the planet.Extemely clever lyrics(yes, ala 10 cc but sans the "canned" feel to their sound.) The vocals -glorious . The musicianship -incredible. Yes, Mr.Slamer is the most underrated ,unsung guitarist of the 70's.DINNER AT THE RITZ is indeed their masterpiece. I was LUCKY enough to see them live on the "YOUNG MEN GONE WEST" tour. They opened for gawdawful Nektar. Simply stated -They were AMAZING. Nothing lost from the studio. Their vocals were fantastic and Slameister-oh how he shredded-(most notably on "Dear Jean" of course). What's with the scarcity of these CDs? I guess for a lost materpiece ya gotta pay the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good!, February 27, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: City Boy / Dinner at the Ritz (Audio CD)
I was skeptical at first about the band, mainly because in all my 29 years I had never heard of them. But after reading the reviews and listening to the samples I thought I would give this band a try. I've foundthe music to be refreshingly good after all these years. Songs from the self titled City Boy album - especially: "Shake My Head And Leave, (Moonlight)" "Deadly Delicious", "Oddball Dance" and "Haymaking Time" are excellent and very original.

I can't really say who comes to mind after listening to their music... Cockney Rebel and maybe a little bit of Alex Harvey comes to mind. A bit of Queen here and there - but all in all, very good.

I have yet to listen to the second CD - "Dinner At The Ritz", but if it's any where are good as the first, I'll have to try a few more albums. Thanks for the good reviews!

This 2-disc set contains the first 2 of their 6 albums from this UK band, originally released in 1976 and 1977 respectively.

Their musical style is quite unique, and reminds me a bit of 10CC. Their arrangements have a nice blend of energy and harmony, particularly in the vocal arrangements. Guitar player Mike Slamer was part of Steve Walsh's albums (including Streets), and the musical performances are quite original. The best way to discover them is to listen to some song samples. As all of their albums are available on CD, your music collection might expand a bit by this quite unique but unknown band.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the world's greatest "unknown" bands, March 18, 1999

This review is from: City Boy / Dinner at the Ritz (Audio CD)
I love these guys!!! I can't believe their first 4 albums are now available on cd. They are definitely one of the greatest of the "unknown bands of the 80's. Hard edged, sometimes funny progressive rock ala Crack the Sky and 10CC. Kinda like if Monty Python made music. Definitely worth your time. Thanks Amazon for making this music available again.
