4.0 out of 5 stars REGGAE OR BUST!, June 2, 2006

This review is from: City Breakers: 18 Frames Per Second (Audio CD)
CITY BREAKERS: Described in the liner notes as a "superb reggae album", this latest effort from Ninja Tune pioneers, Up, Bustle & Out (now releasing via Germany's Collision label) actually travels quite extensively, scooping up popping urban breakbeats, Afro-Latin brass arrangements, sitars, synths of all shapes and sizes, as well as featured vocal performances from Ras Jabulani, MC Blaze, and DJ Mexican; all of which adds up to an ultra-eclectic mash-up that hits its targets at least nine times out of ten.

The best of CITY BREAKERS includes the unearthly ambience of ASCENDING SUN, dub reggae groovers like RAINBOW TOWN and SHEPPARD & HIS FLOCK (see if you can pick out the BEST DRESSED CHICKEN sample), and the old-school GRASS SKIRTS, which is a nice throwback to early nineties Ninja Tune workouts. Five bonus tracks round off the album, including a classy remix of EVERYDAY by Michael Hunter (Butch Cassidy Sound System), a rather psychedelic reggae instrumental, PARAMO'S GHOST, and dub versions of three other album tracks.

Okay, well I don't think I would describe this as a superb reggae album - mostly because that only describes where CITY BREAKERS is coming from, and doesn't hint at where it might be going along the way - but regardless, this is a great record, perfect for hot, dusty summer afternoons and long, starry nights alike. Pass the Rizlas!
