Book Description

A body discovered in a bedroom of his California home and the disappearance of his young wife are the start of a brand new life for Eddie Collins. Eddie is the youthful head of a successful Internet company, and the murdered man is his Chief Financial Officer, dead from a bullet to the chest. And Eddie’s wife, Nina, is the logical suspect in the murder. She is nowhere to be found, but Eddie has an idea where she might be, her birthplace of the City Different of Santa Fe, New Mexico. He takes off after her.

In this tale of love, murder and betrayal, Eddie’s search for Nina embroils him in Santa Fe’s modern dilemma—its old southwest charm giving way to the real estate developers and outsiders with too much money. In the process, he becomes a suspect in a second murder. Finding Nina turns into something he could never have imagined, and it leads to something he never wanted to know.

5.0 out of 5 stars City Different: A Mystery Novel August 31, 2012
Format:Paperback
Stephen Hazlett was born and came of age on the mean city streets of New Jersey. He served three years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps followed by a career as a computer professional. He currently resides in New Mexico, where he pursues the craft of writer of mainstream novels, mystery novels and short stories.

His novel, City Different, features Eddie Collins, a dot-com millionaire with his own Internet company and a beautiful wife, is having a hard time explaining the houseguest lying dead in a guest bedroom, with a hole in his chest that police believe Eddie's wife, Nina, put there. Eddie has two problems with that: the murdered man was openly gay; and he knows that Nina just couldn't have done it. Complicating things, Nina disappears from their Silicon Valley home. Eddie follows her to the place she always goes to when in trouble, the City Different of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The target audience for this work is a reader who enjoys an intelligently written mystery.
Eddie Collins is a late twenties, tall, not bad looking but not concerned with appearances. He is a lifelong computer nerd, shy and never has been very good with women. He has to find a way of clearing his wife of a murder charge that he knows, because of his unshakable love for her, she couldn't have committed.
The antagonist, Nina's Aunt Helen, who raised Nina in Santa Fe, is a large woman, fiftyish and still striking. She is a complex character who is trying to help Eddie track down Nina, while at the same time, has been embezzling millions from Eddie's internet company through an accountant she set up to work as Eddie's Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The CFO is the murdered houseguest found dead in Eddie's guest bedroom.

4.0 out of 5 stars City Different May 16, 2012

I was hooked from the beginning of the story.
Being there at the crime scene, being interrogated by the police-
Stephen Hazlett brought tension into the story from the very beginning.
Bringing the reservation into the story line was a different twist.
A very nice who done it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read from a mystery craftsman January 2, 2006
Format:Paperback
Stephen Hazlett is a veteran of Vietnam and the Army Corps of Engineers. Born in New Jersey, he gravitated to Silicon Valley as a computer professional and finally ended up in New Mexico, where he writes full time. He's published four books besides CITY DIFFERENT: NINA'S STORY; THE FAMILY O'SHEA; A PRIVATE WAR; and THE BUDDHIST.

City Different, a nickname for Santa Fe, New Mexico, is the setting for this Silicon Valley mystery. Eddie Collins is a wealthy Internet guru with a successful company...so successful that he has to hire a CFO, Chief Financial Officer. The tale begins when his young and exotic wife, Nina, runs out of their home in a panic and he finds his CFO murdered. Did his wife shoot him? She has disappeared, and Eddie returns to Santa Fe, her home town, in search of her and the answers to his questions. Nina is well known in Santa Fe, and her Aunt Helen is a powerful and menacing figure in the story as Eddie finds himself returning to her again and again for answers that aren't forthcoming:

"'You're becoming a regular here,' she said, stepping aside to let me enter. She closed the door and walked past me into the Great Room, seating herself on the long couch. I followed behind, but preferred to stand, looking down at her. She really did look tired. Her eyelids were half-closed and her face was pale and covered with fine wrinkles in the light from the window behind her. I found myself wondering how old she actually was."

Stephen Hazlett has managed to craft a fine mystery out of Santa Fe history, including the travails of the Indians who were tortured, ripped off, and driven from the best lands. Santa Fe is almost half way between Los Angeles and Chicago, and Hazlett is interested in maintaining its authenticity.

Book starts out very slowly. About the time I wanted to give up, the plot got more interesting. Ending was fairly good. Please authors, would you PROOFREAD your scripts. So many erros is very frustrating!! Some people who read are relatively literate, you know, and errors are so very obvious.
