Part two in a solid and entertaining fantasy series,
By
This review is from: City In The Glacier (War of Powers, Book 2) (Paperback)
Book two presents the continuing adventures of adventurer Fost Longstrider and his companion Moriana Etuul, as they strive to find a means by which Moriana can regain her rightful place as ruler of the City in the Sky, which floats over the central area of a continent known as "The Sundered Realm" (the name of the first book in this series).
The adventures have a nice mixture of peril and humor, seriousness and levity, straightforwardness and intrigue. The story is written with a careful balance so that no single mood is allowed to dominate and possibly feel too familiar or predictable. Of particular interest is a village composed entirely of those who are practitioners of the ancient teachings of Erimenes the Ethical, although this book contains several new settings and characters that are all quite enjoyable extensions of the fantasy scenario started in the first book. Rather than feeling merely episodic (as some fantasy quest books may), this second volume effectively builds upon the main characters and the readers' understanding of the history, legends, and politics of the land itself. In addition to a village of ascetics, other memorable adventures involve one of the arctic tribes near the southern mountains, the creepy Valley of Crushed Bones, and of course the lost city of Athalau itself, buried in a glacier that has some surprises in it. I have now read this book three times since I had originally discovered this series (and author Robert E. Vardeman) around 1983, and it still holds up very well. Unlike the first book, which provided a mood of resoluton for some elements at the end, even while keeping readers eager to grab the second book, this second volume will have readers feeling that they *must* immediately start reading the third book, called "The Destiny Stone." This is due to the use of a classic "cliff hanger," but rather because the events at the end are so interesting that readers will immediately want some sense of the direction in which the third book will start to take things. In other words, at no point do the authors want readers to feel that the story arc will be totally familiar. Diverse moods, settings, and characters are constantly used to keep things interesting! This is a strong second book in a good fantasy series.

Entertaining adult-oriented fantasy,

This review is from: The City in the Glacier (The War of Powers: Book Two) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is book 2 of the six part "War of Powers" series by Robert Vardeman and Victor Milan. It's first=rate sword-and-sorcery type fantasy with a large helping of adult-oriented humor, graphic sex, and violence. Not for children, but well worth reading if you like this genre. Books from this series often turn up in used book stores.
