Whether he has a CITY HEART, or a SOUTHERN SOUL, Noel brought it all in the form of R&B. This was really what my soul needed at the time. I just bought this disc without hearing anything that may have been released. I placed it all on faith that I would love it, and I did. He is a talented cat who knows how to sing and bring it, and without having the backing of some artist that make you shake your head as to how they got their deals, he has the gift to understand why he's in the business. Whatever it is that you do, please keep doing it, because R&B listeners need performers like you.

While many artists are well equipped with surefire talents and skills in elevating themselves towards major musical exposure, sometimes their confidence can be fragile and opportunities fleeting when facing the unpredictability of the music industry ebbs and flows. When Noel Gourdin was first introduced to the national stage, already backed by a major record deal and an endorsement from an urban icon, the buzz was brewing for this silky soul stylist. It was the spiritually charged tale of the singer/songwriter’s upbringing, “The River,” promoted highly by Steve Harvey on his radio show, that became what is Gourdin’s calling card to this day. But what made Gourdin shine was his heartfelt tenor and spirited lyrics that were highly respectful toward women, as on such emotional ballads as “Sorry.” Though his start with Sony Records with After My Time was extremely promising, especially with “The River” hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart, Gourdin was still an unproven talent who needed to make his presence known in a highly competitive soul market. The success of a single that legions could hum, but whose artist few could name, was not enough for a sustained win. However, Gourdin was not again afforded an opportunity to fully prove himself as a major label talent, with Sony releasing him from his contract right after his debut’s second single failed to break into the R&B Top 40.

Strongly echoing the familiar saying that breaking up is hard to do, Gourdin reportedly battled depression for several months after the divorce from his first musical family. After bouncing back, turning to an independent label was Gourdin’s next move.

Buy this, buy this now, tell all your friends...simply outstanding. His voice is like no other, and his songwriting skills are top notch. This is the kind of music that R&B used to be, it would make you just feel good. Grooves, ballads, uptempo, you name it, Noel busts it loose. A bargain at 10x the price!

Boston, Massachusetts singer Noel Gourdin always came across as an young man with an old soul. That point was brought home when he landed on Epic Records while being a few years removed from high school. In 2008, he released his formal debut "After My Time"- an album that showcased his powerful voice made at home with sample heavy production. His song "The River" became a modest hit thanks to comedian Steve Harvey- who championed the song religiously on his syndicated morning show. Despite getting good reviews for his debut, it was underpromoted. A major reason behind that was his album was released around the time that Epic was going through corporate restructuring, which ended in them dismantling their urban music division. As a result, Noel was let go from the roster. After finding a home at E1 Music for his sophomore effort "Fresh: The Definition", it seemed like things were going well for him. Unfortunately, he ran into another problem. His song "Beautiful" was well-received due to its message of respecting women- at least until the video for the song aired. The video featured what some considered to be a typical model as opposed to a regular, everyday kind of woman. Not helping matters was E1 Music dragging their feet on promoting the album and capitalizing on the success of the single.

He left E1 Music in 2012 and signed with the independent label Shanachie Records to release his third effort "City Heart, Southern Soul". On his new album, he takes the album's title to heart- as he was long inspired by Marvin Gaye, but this time around he takes his cues from Al Green. He reunites with producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Marcellus "Handz Down" Dawson, who contributed to his song "The River".
