CoH vs. WoW,
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: City of Heroes Collector's DVD Edition (CD-ROM)
OK, being a previous WoW player moving to CoH I'll discuss the other side of the coin. Really which game you prefer depends on what you want to do. I played a mage in WoW, and a blaster in CoH. If you are the type of player that likes a fast-paced game where you can get to the action right away then CoH is more your game. I love the ability to get around. In WoW you walk at the same slow speed until level 40, in which they give you a horse for a ridiculous amount of money, which still doesn't boost your speed to an amazing level. They have mithril spurs which ups your mount speed, but you have to bypass other enchants and such that could go on your boots or gloves for the riding enchantments, or you could use a trinket to also up your speed but trinket slots can also be valuable and its a pain to have to switch them out to go quickly. So generally be prepared to spend a lot of your time in WoW actually getting to where you need to go, especially at higher levels. Griffon/Wyverns make it a little better by being able to take flight paths from city to city, these cost money to use, but its not a major hit to your finances once you get to level 20 or so.
Also I'm a big fan of the extensive customization in CoH. WoW you have your basic skills that can be somewhat customized by what talents you choose in your talent trees (you get a point per level after level 10 to put into talents) I was a frost/arcane specialist mage. However once you choose your talents you're locked in until you respec. In CoH you choose your powers and assign a number of slots with which you can put enhancements to up damage, accuracy, endurance cost reductions, endurance drains etc. etc. There are tons of enhancements to choose from which can customize your powers to your individual needs. If your needs change you can change the powers easily by switching out enhancements. Also, you can add extra slots as you level if you need to further enhance a power. A respec allows you to totally change all of your powers, slots, and even change which auxillary pools (travel powers and such) you want. Not to mention the vast customization of your character's appearance, which is just amazing in CoH, while in WoW you get no character scaling, all humans are the same build, same height as well as the other races and only change in appearance by what you wear, and the equipment can't be customized even by a 300/300 (maximum skill level) tailor. CoH gives you 4 costumes which can be incredibly customized to whatever look you're trying to achieve, and they even let you change your look after you've created the costumes for a price. WoW is a beautifully rendered game that looks better than CoH, but I think CoH gives a better gaming experience with fast action and a lot less wasted time walking around and deciding what it is you want to do. I also loved the novelty of Warcraft, being a huge fan of the series. Honestly the novelty wore off as I played. As far as being repetitive, welcome to MMORPGs. All of them are repetitive, WoW is, CoH is... all of them are. Maximum experience in both games is achieved by grinding at higher levels, so its a question of what you're looking for. In my case I want the ability to get into the action quickly with a highly and easily customizable character, and CoH fills that need much better than WoW. Oh, WoW seems to have a better high level game, once you hit 60 you've got battlegrounds and such and a big PvP ladder. I'm not a big fan of PvP and I'm more of a fan of being able to try different character combinations so starting a new toon at level 50 doesn't bother me. In my experience PvP just brings a bunch of whiners to the game. "My class is unbalanced!" or other BS is all you hear about. If you're a big fan of PvP, right now WoW is the best choice... Though City of Villians is coming out soon and we'll have to see what that brings with it. OK, I've rambled enough, hopefully I've given as much of an unbiased view as possible comparing the two, though I do tend to lean towards CoH. Have a good day everyone :)

City of heroes is a MMOPG game--that is a massively multi player online game. This is the second version with the original game and hero creator along with the first two updates. It features special powers/effects that are not available to players who purchased the original.
In city of heroes, you get to create your own hero--choosing its archtype (blaster, defender, scrapper, tank, controller) and its powers. You then create a hero (which is very fun)--choosing its sex (male/female/huge male) and picking out its costume. This is one of the best parts of the game! After that, you get to enter the world of paragon city. You start off weak but progress or level as you kill bad guys, save citizens, finish missions. The great thing is that you get to team up with other heroes to do this or you can solo. As you level you get access to more powers/capes and enhancements which can strengthen the powers you have already. City of heroes was the first online game that i played and it was simple to learn and to master. I have played for about 3 months and i am never bored. There are many opportunities for grouping and joining larger super groups that ensure you always have someone to team with. The tech support is very good as well...the few times i had trouble, there was always a GM around to help me out. This version has several new features: --A VIP badge- which would be essential for those who are badge collectors, but has no new power. --The invisible cape of 4 winds --new powerslide power: which moves like superspeed but looks like you are surfing down the street, very cool. For those already having the original game, i don't think that there is much newer content in this version to warrent the extra money..unless you are like me and have to have every badge! (still working on that illusionist one if there are any interested heroes!!!) But for new players- get this version! Destiny Morna level 48 defender FREEDOM server

Because you could very well lose touch with them after playing this game!
City of Heroes allows you to create your own Superhero with your own set of superpowers, and basically go fight crime in the streets of Paragon City. As you advance in level, you are given new powers and new missions. If you like your games to be 'your own,' then this is definitely the game for you. It is virtually impossible for you to run into the same hero. You build your hero from the ground up, give them a basic set of powers, and boom...you are off to complete missions, either as a team or solo. CoH is truly the best MMOG out there. The graphics are stunning, the game itself is ever changing, and the hero's powersets are just plain fun to work with. You can't believe how much time you spend immersed in missions or just plain hunting. In ordinary life, you can't hit a mugger with supercharged lightening bolts to help a lady get her purse back. Thanks to CoH, you don't ever have to wonder what that joy is like. You can't go wrong with this game...it's just too much fun to pass up. However...word of caution: DO pay attention to the system requirements. If your Video in particular isn't up to par, you'd better go shopping for a Videocard as well.

I've tried out several online multi-player games since I got dsl and I've never felt like playing them for more than few months due to the massive time investment and studying they seem to require. City of Heroes breaks away from that routine. I've been playing since April '04 and I'm still having a great time. They've stripped away all the resource gathering and economy simulation stuff and just left the player to concentrate on foiling the schemes of villains. I went ahead an d bought 6 months of subscription time up front and got the price break on the monthly fee. The game adds new places, new bad guys, and new interesting things every few months, so the game keeps on getting better.
There have been some wild stuff that the company has been testing on the "Test Server" that a prior reviewer referred to. Those experimental changes have already been tweaked back and aren't going to be transferred to the Live servers where it counts. Every online multi-player game does tweaks on character abilities from time to time as the game evolves, and the designers for this game have been doing a good job of communicating with the players before changes are implemented. I feel like a buddy is running this game for me. There is another major update to the game in January coming and the testing reports from players have been intriguing to say the least. New edit: We're looking at the 3rd update for '05 being released this August and a sequel called City of Villains around Xmas. Good times. Anyway, give the game a try if you're interested in playing your own superhero. I wound up shelving my Playstation for this puppy. The first month's subscription comes with the game.

Release your inner hero,
By

When you saw Batman Begins and watched him punch out and terrorize the baddies, did you think, "I could do that"? Ever dreamed of flying over the city streets in search of crime? Ever think about what you'd call yourself if you were a hero?
Here's your chance to live your dreams. A little over a year ago, NC Soft released City of Heroes. The premise is simple: Paragon City fell to an alien invasion of the Rikti years ago. The city's heroes fought valiantly, with most dying in defense of their beloved home. Now the world needs a new generation of heroes, and that's where you come in. For the first time ever in an MMOPG, you can create the superhero of your dreams and fight crime. The possibilities of how you do this are huge. NC Soft is to be commended. They weren't afraid to think big, and with this game, everything is big. You start out by choosing a server to host your hero (there are 11 to choose from). Next you choose what type of hero you want to be. Each type has its strengths and weaknesses. You can be a blaster, with the ability to take down foes from long range. Maybe you want to be a scrapper and unleash your inner Wolverine. How about a controller, able to manipulate the minds of your enemies? Or become a Tanker and show the Hulk how it's supposed to be done. Finally, you could be a Defender, keeping your team healed during missions. There are two other choices (Warshade and Peacebringer), but you don't get to choose them until you have a character at level 50. Some hero types are better suited for solo missions, while some are almost helpless without a team. Hey, just create one of each and try everything. Then you get creative. You can choose practically any type of hero you want. Male or female, human or robot, tall or short, muscular or skinny...the list goes on and on. Design your own costume, and you've got hundreds of ways to do that. Capes don't become available until you reach level 20, and some incredible aura effects are open to you when you hit level 30 (burning eyes, glowing body, etc). You have to complete a mission for each, but they're worth it. After designing your hero, you're off to Paragon City to fight crime. As you defeat more enemies, you gain more XP points, which helps you reach higher levels. With each even level, you gain a new power. With each odd level, you gain two slots you use to enhance your current powers. There are so many fun things to do in Paragon. You can just hunt baddies and beat them up all day long, or you can go on missions with a team (or solo), or join a task force if you've got a lot of time on your hands. NC Soft continues to add things to the program, meaning you never know what's waiting for you when you log on. For Halloween, they unleashed giant monsters and smaller ones on the city. Earlier this year, huge, nasty snow creatures menaced the town. And most recently, they've opened the arenas. In an arena, you can pit yourself, your team, or your supergroup (think The Avengers or The JLA) against other players. The key to this game is finding good teammates and friends. When you join a supergroup, you have an ongoing batch of fellow heroes to call on at a moment's notice. If you join a team, you guys just stay together as long as you'd like and then everyone goes their separate ways. Bad guys are labeled with their level, so you can tell ahead of time if this is going to be a hard battle or a walk in the park. The question presents itself: Can I be ? Well, possibly-but not for long. NC Soft was careful to avoid anything resembling DC or Marvel superhero logos or insignias, and major costume designs (you can't be a web-covered guy, for instance), but there are some creative folks out there. On any given day you might see a Green Lantern, Flash, or Batman clone (and if you play for more than an hour, you're almost guaranteed to run into someone's idea of a Wolverine. He's got to be the most copied character in Paragon). But for the most part, the fun comes from seeing how different the heroes are. And thanks to legal pressure from Marvel, NC Soft has started policing things a little more. Create an obvious knockoff of a well-known character and you might just log in one day to see it changed and renamed "GenericHero1234". You get the chance to redesign him/her without losing your experience points, but keep your ideas fresh and original just to be safe. The graphics in this game are intense, and everything looks great. Just be warned, you'll have to have a video card that supports 3D graphics or it won't work properly. Now with the release of Issue 6 over, new villains will be released, and they added two new types of powers: archery and trick arrows (think Green Arrow), and Sonic powers (think Banshee or Black Canary). The ongoing price of this game is very reasonable compared to "Everquest" and "The Matrix Online". With Marvel and DC both announcing plans to create their own similar MMORPG games, City of Heroes still stands out. Marvel has already said you won't get to play their characters, so I don't know how they plan to draw people away from this game to their own unless they're discounting the price dramatically. If you're looking to lose yourself in an incredible world of heroes and villains, come to Paragon City.

I love this game. New in this version is Powersliding, which is a real fun travel power your character starts with, which is somewhat faster than Sprint.
The graphics are phenomenal, and I even enjoy the game music. It's become my addiction as I try out different characters and work on building them up and fighting crime in Paragon City. The one down side to the game is that it's a pay subscription to play ($15.00/month), but the moderators and tech support are so great that it's worth it in my opinion. Servers are maintained on a regular basis as well.

While my husband and I both enjoy computer and video games, it is very rare that we find one that BOTH of us enjoy, much less will play together. City of Heroes (CoH)is definitely the game for us! There are many cities to explore and the range is virtually endless. (...) there are substories to help make gameplay more enjoyable. Along with that, there are humorous and fun emotes to make chatting a great time...especially in the dance club.
While it's true that at certain levels gaining XP becomes extremely difficult, this does not detract from the game, in my opinion, since gaining Experience Points (XP) is not the only point of the game. Give it a try and enjoy it for what it is.

If like Heroclix, and all the special goodies this is the version of City of Heroes for you. It also has a rare badge that can only be acquired by purchasing and using the code with this copy of the game, and several costume pieces unique to holders of the CoH DVD edition. The game is the premier customizable superhero MMO RPG. It is moving towards it 5th year since release and is going strong. For more info about City of Heroes, check out http://www.cityofheroes.com

City of Heroes is a wonderful game. This product is the Collectors Edition, and the only thing it grants over City of Heroes is an in-game badge ("V.I.P." for hero characters, and "Destined One" for Villains), the "Prestige Power Slide" power, which is an alternate animation of a power every character gets, a few additional costume pieces, and bragging rights. I belive this product is also out of production, hence the price more than twice that of City of Heroes.
For die-hard fans, this product should be bought now before there aren't any left; the price will only increase as time goes on (as is the case with many collector items). If you just want to play a great MMO, buy City of Heroes or City of Heroes Good vs. Evil Edition. (Actually both City of Heroes and City of Heroes Good vs. Evil Edition cost $30, but the latter will give you access to extra costume options, a badge, some extra powers, and the whole Villain side of the game, as well.)

City of Heroes doesn't have a huge degree of depth. Its graphics are shiny and colorful, but there's not a large amount of interaction with the environment, either: trees are still trees after a big fiery battle, and fences and rooftops still need to be leapt over if you can't fly.
That said, there is an unbelieveable amount of fun to playing City of Heroes. It is a gaming experience that streamlines the essence of "fun". Load times are low, "traveling" from one area to another is really quick, and I have yet to experience lag. It's also easy to spend as much or as little time as you want: in other games I am pressured by people--"When are you coming back?" "Why can't you stay longer?". Here, I can be in and out in 15 minutes, and familiar faces are always glad to see me. Overall, I am very happy with my gaming experience in City of Heroes. I haven't logged a thousand hours in it, but I always enjoy a chance to play. Behind the scenes, the company that manages the game has done their best to make it hassle-free. I have experienced excellent customer service by phone or e-mail, I have yet to be unable to access a game server, and although the interface has a lot of different elements to it, it's very easy to get used to once you take the time to read the manual. I even enjoy the character creation interface--it gives you a lot more freedom than the other MMOs and RPGs I have played. |
