Great fun, lots of action,

This review is from: City of Heroes 60 Day Subscription Card (CD-ROM)
I bought this game a week or so ago, and I have barely done anything but play it during my waking hours. I've played a couple of other MMORPGs, and I really like how City of Heroes solves the player-killers problem--there is no player killing allowed! There's a section on the publisher's Web site for an upcoming City of Villians game which claims that it will support consentual player v. player combat against heroes. Sounds like a winner to me; fight others if you want, but the game doesn't depend on it, and you don't have to if you don't want to.Instead, for now, you team up with other players to fight computer-generated evil. And there's lots of it. I've put over 40 hours into the game, and I have yet to get to a spot where there's nothing left to do, and given that I see lots of players with a lot more experience that me still playing (and I haven't even seen over half the places there are to go), I suspect that I'll still find lots more to do. There are also two components of the game (task forces and supergroups) that I haven't even tried yet. Man, I just realized, I need to stop typing and start playing again! The missions and story arcs are interesting, and like all good RPGs (MMO and not), it keeps you wanting to play to find out what's next. I haven't run across any nasty folks like one usually comes across in these games. A little harsh language, maybe, but there's an option to filter it out if that offends you. The character customization is fantastic. I haven't seen two players yet that vaguely looked the same. A couple of tips if you get this game: 1) Although there's a good in-game tutorial to learn to play, do bother to read the manual. There's lots of good stuff in there, and the section on slash commands is not covered in the game, but essential if you actually want to play with other people (and you DO want to play with other people). 2) If you're new to MMORPGs, don't be afraid to approach people around the same level and ask them to team with you for a while, or better yet, help them in some non-profiting way, such as healing them in combat without them asking or holding (not damaging) their enemies. This helps the other player without sucking up experience they are probably trying to earn, and a lot of times, they'll ask you to join them unprompted. It's a lot of fun and you'll build a rapport with folks who like to game with you, something that's very helpful in accomplishing various missions. I really do have to stop writing now, so get this game, get out there, and foil some diabolical plots!

... just in case anyone else is confused. If you click on the image, it enlarges and you can read -- this is a 60 day play card for $30. Serious money, but not as much as the next review suggests.
This game is loads of fun. There is so much freedom in how you design your hero, you can really make any sort of character you can imagine. You are also allowed to charge your character's clothing later in the game if you want to change your mind about the color of his spandex. In just a couple of weeks, I am already level 14 and can fly, yay. My only problem with it is that it seems that as you get to be a higher level, it could get tedious. This is my first mmorpg besides a little Diablo 2, and I would say its very easy and very addictive.

This is the first MMPORG I ever played (well not counting MUD's) and it's been great. A friend of mine bought it for me so he could share his addiction. I've had a blast running around stomping on evil everywhere I go.No player killing!!! Woohoo. There's all sorts of variation and building your characters costume is very addictive. Just a head's up, the Tanker Archtype (class) makes you think (if you're a comic book fan anyway) that you'll be like the Hulk and the Thing, or Colossus. However it's currenty designed that you're a meat shield (you don't do lots of damage). Task Force Missions are cool (tried it once) however you have to put in a lot of time (4 hours or more) so don't join one unless you can commit to that kind of time. Most of the other players are friendly and helpful. It's easy to team up with other people and it's a ton of fun. If only I didn't have to work, otherwise I'd be playing this all the time.

Subscription Cards offer alternative to paying by Credit Card,
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: City of Heroes 60 Day Subscription Card (CD-ROM)
This isn't really a review of the City of Heroes Game itself but the 60 day subscription cards. Personally, I like using the time cards because it offers a lot more flexibility in terms of when I want to play and I don't need to budget for it using Debit/Credit Cards. One of the best aspects of NCSoft Subscription cards is that they are all generic and can be used for all NCsoft games requiring subscription cards. Here's NC's official post on their [...]
Game Time Cards offer a convenient and uncomplicated alternative to paying for your game subscriptions, or allow you to kick off subscriptions to any of the following games; * Auto Assault * City of Heroes * City of Villains * Lineage II I just find the cheapest cards and can apply them to the game I play, regardless whether it says so on the box or not.

A bargain...,

First off, to refute some of the "bad" reviews listed here, City of Heroes and it's companion game, City of Villains, are both Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games. In order for these types of games to survive and expand, they require a monthly subscription fee. That being said, this 60 day time card will apply to BOTH City of Heroes AND City of Villains. If you own both products, one subscription fee is charged each month (no increase, as it's the same servers they're played on). The "normal" fee is $15 a month, so at the lowered price of these cards, you're paying a good amount less per month. CoH and CoV get very regular FREE updates, unlike most games out there which require you to purchase another $30-40 expansion to get access to new areas and the like.
I highly recommend that any long term player order your cards from here.

Buying this gamecard saves you nearly four dollars a month off the regular full price for City of Heroes & Villains. At first, I was a bit skeptical that these cards weren't going to work, but I've used mine and was credited for a full sixty days. I've checked around, and even with buying a year's subscription via ncsoft's website, this is still the cheapest way to go. There's no telling how long amazon.com is going to offer these cards, so stock up on 'em now!

EDIT: It's unclear why on earth anyone would try to sell a $30 game card for $46. If you want to buy a 60-day City of Heroes game card from Amazon, buy this one instead.
--- ORIGINAL: It used to be that Amazon was selling this card for considerably cheaper than it is now. Alas, they have brought their price back into line with the cost of the game overall, and I am kicking myself for not ordering more such cards when they were bonus-priced. Perhaps sooner or later it will fall again. You can enter as many game cards as you like into the system at any time and they will each add two months onto the end; you do not need to wait for your account to expire before using it. Note that though the game card's box has the City of Heroes logo on it, it can also be used for City of Villains stand-alone, or apparently any other NCSoft Game such as Lineage II or Auto Assault. I'm not sure why Amazon is offering the City of Villains branded gamecard at full list price but this one so much cheaper; the only difference is the logo on the box.

Get 'Em When They're Cheap,
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: City of Heroes 60 Day Subscription Card (CD-ROM)
These are the reasons I would recommend buying the time card:
+ Great gift for someone who plays + Doesn't automatically bill you when it expires + Potentially cheaper than paying directly by credit card I've only paid by time card for the last year. I've saved at least $20 over paying directly. I pay taxes if I pay directly so buying the card at MSRP (without tax) is cheaper. Do the math for yourself; you may just figure out you've been missing a great deal here. Also, if you don't have this game but play another PlayNC title you can use it for that game instead. Yes, you can use this card for Lineage II, Auto Assault, and City of Villains.

City of Heroes is a very fun game (see my review of the game itself under that game - 5 stars). This review is actually for the game-time prepaid card, which is a very convenient way to pay for the monthly online fee for this game. This is a great gift for anyone who has the game, but may struggle with the subscription, especially kids who never seem to have enough cash. You may wonder why you should encourage kids to play video games instead of doing other constructive things - well, look at it this way - they're gonna play games anyway and at least this one is about being a Good Guy! Save the poor victims, defeat the evil bad guys, follow the law, etc. Definitely good values for our kids to be emulating.

BEWARE... some unscrupulous vendors are charging far more for these cards than what they are worth...
a 30 day time card is not worth any more than $14.99... a 60 day time card is not worth any more than $29.99. While some vendors sell at less than their face value, most sell at face value... others wait for the unknowing and scalp cards for prices almost twice as what they are worth. Double check your pricing before you click buy. |
