From the Back Cover

When we step across the line
We can sail across the sea

Amazing things happen when people have the courage to live, work, and pray in the spirit of unity and peace. Often, though, to make these amazing things happen, we have to step out of our comfort zone and into a world we find uncomfortable or intimidating. Sometimes that world is physical; other times it can be emotional, relational, or spiritual.

City on Our Knees challenges you to take the first step. It offers stories of people who have stepped across lines. Lines of discrimination, persecution, doubt, prejudice, pride, bitterness, self-isolation, and despair. These are not my stories. They are their stories--stories that have inspired me, stories I want to share with you. I pray and hope that you will be inspired to see how just one person, or one small group, can be a mechanism for change.

God can use us right here, right now,
but we gotta start somewhere.

This book is meant to inspire believers to action. Each section in the book is named after a line from the song CITY ON OUR KNEES. It includes a collection of stories about well known people in the church such as St. Patrick, Charles Spurgeon; as well as a story of a conscripted soldier in Hitler's army and modern day Christians that God has used and is using to change the world.
The stories are inspiring, though I had heard a few of them before(they are well worth hearing again). The beginning of each section includes several Bible verses and quotes from people to contemplate as well as a TobyMac blog. The section then ends with a one-minute remix and a prayer. The layout would be very conducive to using as a devotional and would be acceptable for a youth group setting. My one complaint is that it would have felt more personal and inspiring to read more of what God has done in TobyMac's life rather than him relating other's stories. Yet, it does do what it sets out to do - remind Christians of the importance of prayer and obedience.

Just finished reading this last night...the stories are so well written and researched. I especially like the insightful verses and quotes at the end of each story..gives you something to think about. It also gives me hope in the pursuit of a dream we are currently working on. If it is God's will, it WILL happen, we just have to be patient and follow His lead!

City on Our Knees by TobyMac is a inspiring read for anyone wondering how they can make a difference in the world. TobyMac is well known within the Christian community for his years in the back dc Talk and more recently his time as a solo performer. His recent CD and song, with the same name as the book, inspired him to put together this book filled with anecdotes and quotes about stepping up and making your life matter. The stories range from centuries old tales of revival and the power of prayer to recent stories of children starting charities or miracle rescues. The chapters are titled by lines from the song with stories relating to that theme in each. TobyMac also heads each chapter with a "blog" giving the reader an taste of the ideas within. I loved the many quotes from Scripture and famous theologians that give depth to the chapters and spent much of my time reading with my journal nearby so I could jot many of them down. The book is truly inspiring and gave me an answer to a question I had asked the Lord. Who knows how it will touch you?

When I hear the beginning to TobyMac's song "City on Our Knees," it tends to stick in my head.

"If we gotta start somewhere why not here? If we gotta start sometime why not now?"

Not all contemporary Christian music (and certainly not all popular Christian literature) is theologically sound, and you can't always dance to it, but I always find myself getting into TobyMac's music.

I found myself getting into TobyMac's new book City on Our Knees as well. It's a collection of inspirational stories (and not the cheesy-sappy Chicken Soup for the Soul kind of stories). It seems to take the inspirational story compilation a step farther.

It's about calling people to action. It's about making a difference in the world. It's about showing that God calls all of us God's children, and intends for us to act like a family.

TobyMac often uses the pun "Diverse City"/"Diversity" in his music, and I always get a kick out of it. This book is just about that. From stories of a little girl selling lemonade to help cure cancer, to the inspiration for the movie The Blind Side, to a story about a guy inspired on a subway talking to a drunk man, this is about the love and justice God calls us to. It's what the gospel is all about.

And I'm not gonna lie, it's going to make for some great sermon illustrations.

This is one of the best and most inspiring books I've read since I don't know when. It will impact young and old in such a touching way, but the most wonderful thing about it are the people and their stories. If a four year old born with a debilitating can inspire a nation to raise $1 million for cancer research through lemonade stands, then there isn't an individual alive who can say, "I can't..."

The true stories range across a multitude of activities all over the world and how just one person or one couple make a huge difference in people's lives. It made me want to get busy doing something. However, Toby Mac makes an excellent point by saying that we must wake up and ask God, "Where are You working today? May I join you?"

When we do that, we are assured success in that endeavor because God work, no matter the outcome, will succeed.

This is 6 out of 5 stars. The best of the best, the cream de la cream. Buy, savor it and read it daily. God will change your heart and the stories of these people will change your attitude about "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
