5.0 out of 5 stars The quest continues., May 17, 2001
This review is from: City of the Rats (Deltora Quest #3) (Paperback)
Lief, Barda, and Jasmine have survived the treacherous Lake of Tears. Now, they must journey on to the City of the Rats, where the third gem of the Belt of Deltora is hidden. Along the way, they run into trouble and are captured by the inhabitants of a mysterious city called Noradz. In a place with so many strange rules and customs, it's only a matter of time before the three companions make a mistake and are punished. They escape and make their way out of the city, but ahead of them lies their goal - the horrifying City of the Rats. Long ago, the city was overrun by evil, and the few surviving inhabitants fled. Now, Lief, Barda, and Jasmine must survive the brutal onslaught of rats at the city's entrance, and if they make it through, they must face the horrible Guardian of the city. I reccomend this book to all readers who enjoyed the first two books in the Deltora Quest series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully horrible, September 27, 2008
This review is from: City of the Rats (Deltora Quest #3) (Paperback)
I have nothing against rats. In fact, I keep one as a beloved pet. But wow, they can be pretty darn terrifying in the right circumstances, and that fact makes this one of the freakist Deltora books they have.

And, oddly enough, very personal and psychological.

Our little group of questers find themselves torn between two cities: one guarded by a terrifying monster and another that lives in freakish perfection and a fear of all things small and furry.

It's a clever and creepy insight into how people can be locked into strange views of the world and a great addition to this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bit of a drop off; very clever at the end, October 14, 2011

I am a big fan of this series, and very much admired the first two volumes. This third effort felt very weak in the middle, but that was mostly setup for a strong finish, so be patient.
There is a very muddled sub-plot involving war profiteering, and the characters lose focus in the middle, but again, be patient.
This is still a superior series for young readers, but be warned that this volume is not as high energy and straightforward as the first two books, and some parts may need explaining for the youngest readers.

RATS! RATS IN THE HUNDREDS! If you like rats this is the book for you. Why, there's a whole city of the things. Oh, and one horribly powerful being of unspeakable evil that can supposedly never be destroyed.

Happy reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Deltora Quest : By Emily Rodda, April 20, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: City of the Rats (Deltora Quest #3) (Paperback)
If you ever want to read a good book, you need to read the series of Deltora Quest. These books are about a prince named Lief, an old palace guard named Bardah, and a wild girl from the forests of silence named Jasmine. In the book, the Shadowlord has taken over the kingdom of Deltora, and has taken the seven gems from the Belt of Deltora and has put them in seven very dangerous places to guard the gems. Now that Lief is old enough, he, Bardah, and Jasmine will go recover the seven gems. I would reccomend that all people interested in adventures books needs to read this book.I have read lot's of books, but none of the books that I've read have been this good.I also guarantee that you will like this book just as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars The City of freaky Rats, February 4, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: City of the Rats (Deltora Quest #3) (Paperback)
THE CITY OF THE RATS is the third edition of the DELTORA QUEST series. When Iread I felt a soft tingling and realized for the third time a Emily Rodda book was drawing me in. I could feel her literary power coursing through me and I must advise young immpresionable children to stay away from this book as it will give them nightmares. Now I must make a comment relevant to the subject: because DELTORA QUEST is based on Welsh Mythology like THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE CHRONICLES OF PRYDAIN why wasn't one of the rats a twisted little creep obssessed with the Opal, the new gem our heroes are after? I have no clue but I think Emily Rodda is trying to force us to learn from our repeating history which has included creepy rats conquering whole cities, or at least paralyzing them with fear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quest for the Stones, December 16, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: City of the Rats (Deltora Quest #3) (Paperback)
1. Deltora Quest is about a boy named Leif, Jasmine, and Barda. They are looking for the third stone, THE OPAL. The opal's power is to tell the future.
2.The Deltora Quest series is good, but to me, the third book is the best.
3. The dynamic character is Leif because he changes though the series.
4. I recommend this to people whom like fantasy books.
