Book Description

March 3, 1999
This book marks Jeff Davis's debut full-length book of poems. City Reservoir offers a series of Davis's poetic meditations upon being-in-the city. The first section captures mythic rhythms of dream, linguistic associations, and overhead conversations--rhythms that mirror an individual mind and a city's beats meshing with and resisting one another. Risking to blend the narrative, lyrical, meditative, and surreal into single poems, Davis hears the multiple voices that comprise a full day in the city. The second section centers upon ways of flying in, loving, and navigating the city. As Frederick Turner notes in his introduction to the book, these series of interrelated meditations can be read as a single poem, a single prayer to living in the city.

Editorial Reviews

Review

City Reservoir is a pipeline that runs from the wells of subjective dream through the passages of myth and disciplined poetic form to a grave and charming statement of public moral philosophy....It is a gift to Dallas-this new city, sprung up on the sun-baked prairie out of the dreams and nightmares of two million energetic people drawn from the ends of Earth and forced to invent themselves a landscape. This invented landscape Davis has made into his own Lake District, his own concrete-edged Arcadia....Davis's message is not, however, just for Dallas. It is for all of Texas, and for America as a whole.... -- "The Aqueduct of Poetry: An Introduction to Jeff Davis's City Reservoir" by Frederick Turner, Founders Professor of Arts & Humanities at the University of Texas at Dallas

From the Author

Written at a time when I was almost ready to flee the city for the mountains or the desert, this book actually helped me find my way back to dwelling well amid traffic and smog, crowds and noise. The first section of poems resulted from my attempts to remain aware from dawn to dusk of the many signals the city sends me. I also was seeking some way to blend the hypnotic rhythms we often associate with songs of oral traditions--the repetition, the incantory refrains.
