Book Description

February 2, 2002
Topographical photographs and documentation of structural changes reveal the transformations that the new German states have undergone in the past decade. Conceived by the Leipzig-based group Verbundnetz Gas AG, City Scape East is really an archive of reality, a connection between the exterior visible in photographs and the interior of the people who live in these places. The photographs, primarily by East German photographers, show industrial plants and architectural complexes, streets and cultural landscapes, interiors and backyards--in short, the entire life of 1990s Eastern Germany. Comparisons between new and old photographs, and revisits by photographers and writers to altered sites, document the changes undergone by Germany during a decade of deep upheaval.
