I don't have a problem with sequels because many times I find them more appealing than the original. This is another example, although not a wide margin. The first was good; this is a little better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Yet another misconceived sequel
This sad sequel forgets the honest and genuine drama that was at the heart of the original film and replaces it with dopey, obvious jokes and contrived sentimentality. Mitch and Phil (Billy Crystal and Daniel Stern--Bruno Kirby is nowhere to be seen this time) team up with Mitch's brother (Jon Lovitz) and Curly's twin (Jack Palance) to locate a fortune in missing gold...

I don't have a problem with sequels because many times I find them more appealing than the original. This is another example, although not a wide margin. The first was good; this is a little better.

Despite being almost two hours which is long for a comedy, this moves very fast. That's the selling point of the movie: it's entertaining. Not only do you get a comedy with a lot of laughs, you get brilliant Western scenery enhanced by the widescreen DVD.

The negatives, at least for me, was the all-too-secular outlook on life and an obsession with sex espoused by lead actor Billy Crystal and his clueless buddies Daniel Stern and Jon Lovitz and the unnecessary profanity by Jack Palance.

All the characters, however, are definitely fun to watch and there is a good message in the end about sacrificing for friends and relatives. The story also features a very neat twist at the end. This is a film you can laugh at with multiple viewings.

5.0 out of 5 stars "What do you think of that, Spanky?", March 16, 2006
Here comes . . . something different.

In the first city slickers, you are introduced to mitch who is a buisness man trying to do something different with his life and joins a cattle drive with his friends. Along the way he learns about life and morals from his cattle drive buddy Curly. Unfortuneatly, he died during the cattle drive and had to be buried by his friends.

Fast foward a year later.

After realizing that he's now forty, he decides to have no surprises on his birthday but gets one very big one instead: A map in Curly's hat that was given to him.

A treasure map from the 1900's to be exact.

And what's more surprising is the fact that Curly, although he was buried for a year, might still be alive.

This is a great sequel. A different pace, mood, setting, theme, everything. That's what you gotta do with a sequel; try something different.

I loved watching mitch and his buddies figure out the clues while battling claim jumpers and avoiding dangerous territory.

There's gold in them there hills . . . and Curly's buddies are just the ones to find it.

Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars city slickers 2 as good as 1?, June 21, 2000
This review is from: City Slickers 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
if you watch city slickers 2 you may agree or not that it is as good as city slickers one. I personally think it is worth a watch. It also is a great sequal for 1, because the first one leaves you off where mitch's (crystal) life is beginning to be okay but.....more to come about him and his other friends in the second!

This sad sequel forgets the honest and genuine drama that was at the heart of the original film and replaces it with dopey, obvious jokes and contrived sentimentality. Mitch and Phil (Billy Crystal and Daniel Stern--Bruno Kirby is nowhere to be seen this time) team up with Mitch's brother (Jon Lovitz) and Curly's twin (Jack Palance) to locate a fortune in missing gold. Expect jokes about snakebites on the butt and half-witted locals as well as manufactured action sequences and sappy male bonding. Crystal desperately grimaces his way through his middle-aged-cute shtick. Forget this one and watch the original again instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Review..., September 10, 2000
This review is from: City Slickers 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold is a sequel that I can say is better than the first. They are both very good though. As the person before me stated, at the end of the first, it is sort of a new start for Mitch, played extremly funny by Billy Crytal.

What made this movie better was instead of that one guy from the orginal and Daniel Stern, you get Daniel Stern and Jon Lovitz, who I think is hiliarous!

The title pretty much says what the plot is, it has a very uplifting ending and what more can I say? See it, it is a classic, Spanky!

Have A NiCE LiFE!

Ryan

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to CJ! It's a great sequel!, August 26, 2003
By A Customer
One of the few sequels that live up to the original. Yes there are a few gags repeated from the first movie - it's called CONTINUITY, CJ - look into it.

Other than that, it takes the likeable characters from the original and puts them in a brand new adventure. This isn't a retread of the original plot. Scenery is beautiful, Lovitz is a riot.

Billy Crystal is looking marvelous in the amusing comedy that is fun to watch. I actually like the sequel just slightly better than the original. Billy crystal is charming and funny and Jack Palance is great.
