Editorial Reviews

Since forming in 2007, The Revivalists have rightfully earned their reputation as the next breakout band from the music capital of New Orleans. The group's blend of soulful, syncopated rock and earnest songwriting comes to life through meticulously crafted and ever-evolving live performances. The Revivalists have spent the last few years touring all over the country alongside, Gov't Mule, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Galactic, Moon Taxi, to name a few and playing countless sold out shows. City of Sound was recorded in New Orleans by Producer Ben Ellman (Galactic,Trombone Shorty, Gypsyphonic Dysko). The album includes 8 LIVE bonus tracks, recorded from various SOLD OUT shows from Fall 2013.

Heard they were great so I bought this CD when I got home, absolutely loved it.
jacqueline s.
This is the best new up and coming band out there, their sound is soulful, raw, and full of emotion.
Shane Despres
The live recording that was included as a bonus was almost better than the studio album.

Rarely does an album come out that I can listen to from beginning to end, this is one of them... I've seen other reviews here try to describe their sound and everyone has difficulty for a reason, including me... Think guitar, bass, drum/beat core with a mixture of horns, keys, and steel guitar, what is that? Do I hear a kinda dark Portishead sound on "Upright"? Maybe some Kings of Leon but with horns sound on "Pretty Picture" or "When I'm Able"? Who knows....

In New Orleans they call it gumbo, start with that roux base and add whatever you like... I like that these guys don't fall neatly into a box and I love this album... David Shaw's voice is incredibly soulful... It gets into my head, the melodies are complex, the lyrics are meaningful, and the synergy of the ingredients makes this album so much like the place it was born, right in line with the food and art that bubbles up from New Orleans...

Great album!!!

Had never heard of this band, before a friend recommended them, and I was impressed with a couple cuts that I heard from this album. Well, I listened to all the samples on Amazon, and decided to buy it. The album is listed in the "rock" genre, but it's a little harder to pin down than that. I like many bands that have brass in them, and this one does. They're supposedly from New Orleans, and I can hear that influence on some cuts, there's some R&B there, and some alt country-ish as well. I've always liked bands that aren't stuck in one genre. I'm an old-timer, who grew up in Detroit, with Motown, and Top 40 radio, so I like variety. The Revivalists have a varied sound. I will probably give some of their other stuff a listen. I've only listened to this album, all the way through, about 3 times. I've already decided that I like it a lot. Imagine what I'll feel about it after I've heard it a lot more.

Am purchasing this MP3 Album...whatever, as I saw this band Live @ The Boom Boom Room/San Francisco 09/14/12....This Band is incredibly complex, soulful, funkified, and lyrically proficient, with a rhythm section that is tight.....tight....I said
These guys should be a national act, I say they stole the show at the BoomBoom Room, as they were the opening act, not taking ANYTHING away from the musicians that were the Headliners....just that these guys are quite talented, and have a very, very good, unique, and fresh sound!
Rock On .....

The Revivalists are clearly a Rock Band, that happens to channel some Funk, Jazz, Blues, & Jam-Band sounds as well. Great depth of music. So much better than anything played on the radio.

You won't regret this purchase, nor their earlier LP-Vital Signs; or their Original self-titled EP. Check them out.

you would be very hard pressed to try and describe the sound of the Revivalist except as some kind of convergence of many talented musicians who offer a party in your ears. The album really does have something for everyone and it is a journey that you will want go down often. It will grow and develop after every listen and you will find favorites but it is the live addition to City of Sound that is worth the price of admission. If given the opportunity to see them you will not be disappointed.

I rarely review Amazon products, but I just wanted to say that this album, from a band I had never heard of before, has become one of my favorites for the originality of their sound/style, as well as great vocals, lead guitar and horns. It is also clear that the album had an excellent producer. Never heard anything like this. Looking forward to their next album.

I probably should wait to write a review of this album until I've had a chance to listen to it a few more times, but the fact that nobody has reviewed it yet made me feel that I needed to rectify that injustice. I've only listened to the album one time through, and my initial thoughts are that it just rocks. I've been aware of it for a little while, since it was produced by the great Ben Ellman of the group Galactic, but I hadn't gotten around to picking it up. I don't have fully formed thoughts on everything, but I'll give a few general impressions that I got... All of the songs are deceptively complex. The first track 'When I'm Able' is somewhat reminiscent of Dave Matthews...and really the whole album exists somewhere in the same general orbit...but it just has a funk to it that ol' Dave rarely achieves. Other songs, like 'Criminal' reminded me a bit of early Chili Peppers...especially in the breakdown. Other times, I hear almost a Maroon 5 type influence...but if Maroon 5 wasn't made of Chinese plastic and had soul. Like I said, I haven't had the chance to really digest the whole thing fully, but on first listen, it has me grooving and wanting to listen to it again...a rare feat in today's musical environment.
