Book Description

May 15, 1984 0226646114 978-0226646114
The City, first published in 1925 and reprinted here in its entirety, is a cross-section of concerns of the Chicago urban school during the period of its most intense activity. Park and Burgess realized that ecological and economic factors were converted into a social organization by the traditions and aspirations of city dwellers. In their efforts to achieve objectivity, these sociologists never lost sight of the values that propel human beings.

"It is a classic which remains relevant largely because it poses questions still unresolved."—Choice

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Urban Soc, March 7, 2007

A must read for any urban sociologist--but if you are looking at this page, it's likely that you know this already. If you're not a trained sociologist, this is one of the most classic works from the Chicago School of Sociology & this book will give you a very good sense of the roots of American urban sociology. An easy read, and although many of the ideas have been challenged or are out of usage by now, its still a wonderful read to understand how researchers conceived of the city during the early period of urbanization. Enjoy.

First Sentence:
The city, from the point of view of this paper, is something more than a congeries of individual men and of social conveniences-streets, buildings, electric lights, tramways, and telephones, etc.; something more, also, than a mere constellation of institutions and administrative devices-courts, hospitals, schools, police, and civil functionaries of various sorts. Read the first page
