there's got to be something better out there,

This review is from: City Walks with Kids: Washington D.C.: 50 Adventures on Foot (Cards)
So far, I am not at all impressed with these cards. I bought them this past summer when Costco carried them - even though my trip is not until the summer '09. It was a pretty new "book" still so I didn't find any reviews. I figured anything that would keep my kids (ages 6,9 & 11) interested in this trip would be worth it - plus I thought maybe they could "chose" a card for the day. I figured the cards would be easier to carry than a touring book. I've been planning <this trip> for quite a while, mostly using the internet as a resource. I was not impressed when I opened up this deck of cards. One side is a map, which barely qualifies as a map; it wouldn't help you get very far. The "map" has a huge cartoon picture on it (to make it fun for kids, I guess), a couple street names (mainly 2 cross-streets), and some numbers that reference the stops you are to make. The other side is a very brief description of the "walk". Overall, my biggest complaint is that these cards contain no details. I am quite disappointed that many walks consist entirely of the inside of a single building (example: one walk is the Museum of Natural History). I was really looking for something that had a bit more distance (for instance, a mile), and more information that would appeal to children. I would not recommend buying this ... there has got to be a better (more helpful) book out there!

This is the first time I've used these cards. What a smart idea! We loved the card system. Making them spill resistant was also a very smart idea. It sure was convenient to grab just the few cards we needed for a particular area we wanted to explore. Having info on one side and maps on the other really worked for us. Granted, the cards cannot be as comprehensive as other guide books, but if your inention is just to see the major sights on foot, then this is the best few bucks you can spend!
