These are a great way to get to know Washington, DC.,

These cards provide an excellent way to get out and explore the nation's capital city. Having studied DC's architecture and as a resident of DC (going on my fifth year in the city), I must say these cards are a great way to learn more about the city and its neighborhoods. I have used these cards to take students on a architectural tour of the capital and found them to be well-done, convenient and pretty comprehensive. Definitely a way to make a tourist's self-guided tour more interesting (and prevent them from getting lost, too).

I live in the Washington, DC area, and I'm always looking for new places to walk. I was excited to see this product; it promised to take me places I might never have seen before.
But, for someone whose primary interest is the actual walking, I've been disappointed in the cards. They don't tell you how far any of the walks are, so you're really guessing by looking at city blocks or landmarks. And while they call these 50 walks, some of them are only a few city blocks, so I'd hardly count them as 50. If you're touring Washington for the first time, this is probably a great way to stroll by monuments, memorials and museums and a few parks. But if you live here and really want to get out there and walk, check out some of the other walking books instead.

We bought the LA ones for us when we moved here and I just bought the Washington DC ones for a friend that is being transferred there this summer! She has already gone through them with her family and can't wait to use them. They are fun and easy to use. I would definately use other ones as well!

Excellent, Convenient, & Smart.,
This review is from: City Walks: Washington, D.C.: 50 Adventures on Foot (Cards)
We just returned from Washington, D.C.. This is the first time I've used these cards. What a smart idea! We loved the card system. Making them spill resistant was also a very smart idea (I spilled coffee on them once - no damage!) It sure was convenient to grab just the few cards we needed for a particular area we wanted to explore. Having info on one side and maps on the other really worked for us. Granted, the cards cannot be as comprehensive as other guide books, but if your inention is just to see the major sights on foot, then this is the best few bucks you can spend! I only wish they had more cities available. Thankfully they do have our next destination for sale; Paris, France.

I was already familiar with the City Walks series and have used their products as souvenirs of cities I've already visited as well as preparation for places I hope to go. I love the size of the cards and stick them in a Ziplock bag whenever I'm walking around in the rain, so that they can be read without getting wet.I haven't been to Washington, D. C. since I was a child, and I wanted to fix in my mind the geographical relationships of all the places I had visited then. In addition, much has been added to the area since I was there, and I wanted to know how all those additions were positioned in relation to where I had been. It helps me to visualize as I read or listen to the news. This deck provided all that. It was reasonably priced, very well wrapped, and arrived quickly. |
