Editorial Reviews

Review

"Citycide is the latest, explosively charged murder mystery featuring gritty, street-smart cop Danny Cavanaugh... in this exciting, action-packed saga of murder, mayhem, and brutal struggles for power! Highly recommended." - John Burroughs  Midwest Book Review

"Filled with twists involving high level cover-ups, drug trafficking, sex peddling and questionable federal surveillance, aptly titled Citycide is a terrific Motown police procedural.  Fast-paced, readers will relish Danny's tour of the mean streets of Detroit." - Harriet Klausner, The Mystery Gazette

"Gary Hardwick has delivered another literary buffet of suspense and mystery coupled with real emotion. CITYCIDE is one of those books that will be perfect for the summer but is sure to entertain and keep you engaged from start to finish. You won't be disappointed." - Cyrus Webb Conversations Magazine

"[S]uspenseful plot; the gritty settings of inner city Detroit and the local power structures; and themes of friendship, family, loyalty, honor, and justice... if you are looking for an urban mystery thriller with intense political drama, colorful characters, and action-packed excitement, this reviewer recommends Citycide." - Fe'Dricka Moore, QBR The Black Book Review

From the Author

Some time ago, I wrote a fine little thriller called Supreme Justice.  In that book, the hero had a brash, hot-headed friend named Danny Cavanaugh.  He was bold, handsome and courageous, a hero himself.

And he died.

It hurt me to write the lines ending his life.  It hurt my publisher too, who found a white man with a black soul fascinating.

So Danny was resurrected and I wrote another fine thriller about him, Color Of Justice.  It was so fine in fact that a movie studio bought it and they tried to kill him--in development.

I realized that young Mr. Cavanaugh had so much to say and he wasn't done saying it.  Now, I look forward to him speaking on the big screen.

After that novel, I realized that Danny Cavanaugh was an artistic and sociological representation of all men, a creation of his environment and biology, a balance of intellect and instinct, restraint and passion.

This book is a continuation of Danny's story and more.  It brings back faces from past novels and shows how Mr. Cavanaugh was created from them all.

If you are tired of predictable murder mysteries and love crime tales, pick up or download Citycide today! As a fan of Mr. Hardwick's other books, I was thrilled to hear that he was working on a murder mystery inspired by the downfall of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick...and I was not disappointed. Citycide is well written and captured my attention from the beginning. I have never visited Detroit, but the author paints such a vivid picture of the city that I can imagine perfectly where the book's action plays out. If you love descriptiveness in novels as much as I do, you will not be disappointed! Plus, the plot is detailed with enough action and conflict weaved in to keep readers engaged. There were also no "slow" parts of this story; it moved along well and nothing dragged on needlessly (Hooray!). The author does an excellent job of raising enough suspicion to keep readers wondering who may have had a hand in this crime.

Fans of Mr. Hardwick will welcome the return of Danny Cavanaugh, Marshall Jackson, and Jesse King, characters from his previous novels whose paths cross as the story progresses. While we get updates on Jackson and King, the book focuses mostly on Danny Cavanaugh, a white detective who was raised in inner city Detroit, his investigation of this crime, and changes in his personal life. Even readers who have not read Mr. Hardwick's previous books will appreciate Danny and the other well developed characters in this story. Can't wait for the next book. Bravo!

Having read Gary Hardwick's previous books, I was anxiously awaiting this one. And CITYCIDE did not disappoint! It brings some of the exciting characters from Hardwick's previous books together for an exciting, thrilling ride through the gritty side of Detroit, and I'm not talking about just the city politics, but the streets of Detroit where I grew up. It brings up memories of the city, past and present. Danny Cavanaugh is unlike any other cop I've read about. He's street-wise, complex, intense, and has the City of Detroit and it's citizens to protect as his #1 priority until a change in his life makes him question his prorities. CITYCIDE is a must-read if you like non-stop action and suspense! I can see this up on the big screen soon.....!!

At a time when it seems as though much is made of what criminals look like versus the motive behind the activity, author Gary Hardwick returns to the literary scene with the book CITYCIDE, reminding us what really matters in the fight for justice.

Bringing his fans back Danny Cavanaugh, Hardwick takes us not only into the fight to solve a brutal murder mystery but also to possibly save the soul of Detroit. Using his knowledge of the city, Hardwick takes the readers on a sinister plot that shows that corruption and arrogance has no color but the price for crossing the wrong one is almost certainly death. Wanting to follow the clues wherever they lead him not only puts the beloved Cavanaugh in harm's way but threatens to uncover a masterful cover-up that could rock the entire city of Detroit to its core.

Using his skill with dialogue and getting the reader into the head of the characters, Gary Hardwick has delivered another literary buffet of suspense and mystery coupled with real emotion. One of the sidebar issues that struck me in reading CITYCIDE was the price that those in law enforcement sometimes have to pay in order to be the best at what they do. It's not just about risking their lives. Their families and everything they love are put at risk as well.

CITYCIDE is one of those books that will be perfect for the summer but is sure to entertain and keep you engaged from start to finish. You won't be disappointed.

Having read several of Mr. Hardwick's books, I can say that he is still at the top of his game with Citycide.

From the opening sequence you find yourself wanting to turn the page to find out what happens next and then when something does happen, you want to know what will happen after that, as you are never really sure as to what will happen next.

This book is totally and completely invigorating.

So, if you are looking for a book to read that will literally have you turning the pages in anticipation of what is going to be revealed, said, or done, this is the book to purchase!!!

Kudos to Mr. Hardwick, on a very well written and plotted out novel.

I couldn't put this book down. The plot grips the reader and doesn't let go until the very end. Danny Cavanaugh, a white policeman living in the heart of Detroit, really catches the city's flavor. The other characters are so real to life and will definitely remind you of people that you know or about whom you have read. I have ordered two more of Gary Hardwick's books and can't wait to read them.

I really enjoy Gary Hardwick novels about the cops in Detriot. Regardless if you read his other book or just starting with this one, you are pulled into their world.
I'm looking forward to many more from Hardwick!
