Editorial Reviews

Canadian power-duo Indian Handcrafts' well honed, massively melodic Sargent House debut Civil Disobedience For Losers seems to belie the simplicity of instrumentation between drummer/vocalist Brandyn James Aikins and guitarist/vocalist Daniel Brandon Allen. Recorded with producer Toshi Kasai (Tool, Big Business) and featuring special guest appearances by Melvins drummers Dale Crover and Coady Willis, the album the album brims with infectious guitar riffs, intense vocal harmonies and pounding drums that spin wildly out of control as they churn out headbanging rock so catchy it seems like it's been a forgotten art for countless decades.

It's been cool - almost mandatory - for heavy bands to rip off Tony Iommi and Black Sabbath, since, well pretty much since Black Sabbath put out its first record. With brief hiccups to the contrary around the eras of hair metal and nu metal, Sabbath has always been required knowledge for any group relying on the power of the riff. The same hasn't been true of another metal riff god - Tom Morello. A few bands over the years have attempted to rip off Rage, none very successfully in my opinion. Why doesn't anyone accurately ape that beautiful stock of riffs Morello has left behind in the Rage and Audioslave catalogs? Yes, I know Audioslave isn't considered cool and I don't care. I don't know why, but you're 100 times more likely to hear the next big "stoner rock" band imitate A National Acrobat in its entirety than hear that act even toss a passing riff reference at the first three Rage records. My point is that Indian Handcrafts (and I have yet to read this in any review of this record) absolutely goes for it with the RATM riffs and absolutely nails them. Holy hell, hair standing on end and goose bumps nails them.

True, the Rage-esque riffs are a small but important sliver of the bounty of beautiful rock on offer on this masterpiece. But it's worth noting because when this band goes for the Morello riff, it makes me as excited as I can ever remember when listening to heavy music. This Toronto two piece (I didn't know they were a two piece until after 4 or 5 listens and I could barely believe it after I found it - the sound is that full) just goes around the metal and rock map, conquering sounds and tones left and right with ease and style. The low end of the guitar and the dual vocals remind me of another two piece in the Melvins/Toshi Kasai community, Tweak Bird.

This is one of the heaviest non-heavy / non-metal bands in the land. I'd say they're teetering on the edge of hipster-doofus status, but their covers of Fu Manchu songs has waived all violations as far as I'm concerend. I've been rocking this disk / LP for for about a year and it hasn't gotten old. Simply amazing consideing they're just a two peice.

As with anything, if your into this kinda genre this is a great album. Catchy riffs galore.
Makes you wanna rock out, what more can I say. Just two guys in this band, but its not like you can tell with the power they play with. pick it up.

I heard these guys on XM (verge 151). Red Action was the tune. I liked it, took a flyer on the album. Canadian sludge metal makes me laugh. I liked it. Reminded me of Death From Above 2000 + The Sword + Priestess. Bruce Lee is a pretty rocking track.

Good gym music, thanks fellas. Also, your song titles are funny. Starcraft?? Way to wear your angry nerd badge proudly!
