A good start but needs a lot of work to be useful!, April 8, 1999

This review is from: Civil Engineering Reference Manual for the Pe Exam (Engineering Reference Manual Series) (Hardcover)
I purchased this text along with many of my friends for the obvious purpose of reviewing for the PE exam. I began solving problems in selected sections and found numerous errors in equations and in the solutions. I thought I might be incorrect and had many of my friends review my work as well as the solutions provided. They found the same problems. In general, the book does a good job at attempting to consolidate a lot of information but fails at really preparing you for the exam. The problems in the text are, in general, an over simplification of what one will see on the exam. In addition, a number of the equations used in the text or in the solutions are also overly simplified and work only in very unique cases which you will not likely see on the exam. Its a book that should be used with great caution. I do reccomend the 101 problems and solutions text by this author. Some of the solutions have the same problems stated above but the problems are more reflective of what you would likely see on the exam. Its a good place to start your review for the PE but there are other texts that will prepare you more effectivly.

Good reference book but not enough to pass the exam, May 1, 1999

This review is from: Civil Engineering Reference Manual for the Pe Exam (Engineering Reference Manual Series) (Hardcover)
This book deals with old codes and neet to be updated to the current codes. I just took the PE exam and found that this book is missing many important information and the examples offered in the book are so simple. The book can eliminate several sections that most unlikely will see in the exam and at the same time add more important topics. The examples within each section need to be revised and become more difficult. Definetly, you will need another reference book with this one in order to pass the exam. I believe that this reference book in addition to "Principles and Practice of Civil Engineering by Potter" are good enough to pass the exam
