Book Description

In my long experience, no other single issue has been such a scientific and national security conundrum as electromagnetic pulse (EMP). The phenomenon itself is not easy to explain to non-scientists, be they policymakers, generals, or ordinary citizens. The EMP threat seems like the stuff of science fiction. Yet your life depends upon understanding EMP.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading October 22, 2012
This book discusses a little known (To the American people) threat to this nation that we have, at this time, no defense in place for. The book provides a description of the various types of naturally and man made electromagnet pulse events, how a natural EMP event or an EMP attack would cripple this country, why our current emergency response plans would be woefully inadequate, what we can do to mitigate the risk, and why our leadership has failed to either inform or protect Americans from this threat. After reading this book you will understand why the current chess game playing out with Iran is so vitally important.

Simply stated: What if the electric power went out and never came back on? Yes, that sounds very much like the premise behind NBC's "Revolution." But unlike the cause of the power failure in "Revolution," this is not science fiction. Nor is it scare mongering. A total power failure via an EMP attack is based on factual material and was proven to be possible during the American and Soviet nuclear tests conducted many years ago.

Do be aware that this book was written by scientists and analysts from agencies such as the CIA and NSA. It is not leisure time reading. Those looking for an easier way to learn about this topic or who do not have the means to read an electronic book might enjoy reading "One Second After" which is also available on Amazon. While a fictional story, the book will explain how an EMP attack would force America back to the 1800S in literally one second in time. Whichever version you choose, please take the time to educate yourself about a threat that could be employed by any nuclear armed nation to destroy this country.

Does anyone else see anything ironic about this book being offered for Kindle only? (Or at least I think so, because I didn't find a paper version here...)
Sounds like an interesting read, but in this case I'll wait until I find the edition I can read by candlelight in case it becomes necessary. Gave it 4 stars just so the numbers aren't skewed by my smart-assedness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading before EMP, not after January 6, 2013
For those reviewers lamenting that it's not available in paperback: if you wait until EMP has happened, this book won't help you at all; this book has zero applicability to the aftermath of an EMP attack. It's about what EMP is and what we can do beforehand to make recovery possible. Every American should read this book for their own edification and preparedness, and to encourage the US government to act, but should not rely on this book for help surviving without electricity; that would be like reading a book on life preservers after you've already fallen out of the boat.
