5.0 out of 5 stars A dramatically presented and extensively researched survey, January 10, 2003
This review is from: The Civil War in the Carolinas (Hardcover)
The Civil War In The Carolinas by civil war expert and historian Dan Morrill (History Department, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Director of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historical Society) is a dramatically presented and extensively researched survey and analysis of the impact the American Civil War had upon the states of North Carolina and South Carolina, and the people who called these states their home. A meticulous, scholarly, and thoroughly engaging examination of the details of history and the sweeping change that the war wrought for everyone, The Civil War In The Carolinas is a welcome and informative addition to American Civil War Studies reference collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overlook the typos, January 31, 2011
This review is from: The Civil War in the Carolinas (Hardcover)
I picked up a copy of this book on a recent visit to South Carolina and read it in a few days. It is too bad that the book did not have a better editor. There are many typographical errors in the book (usually transposed letters, but sometimes ungrammatical sentences), which is a real shame, because the narrative itself is just as strong as other reviewers have indicated. The quality of the photographs is sometimes poor - you will find better copies of them in the Time-Life series, for example - but if you just want a good overview of the civil war in the Carolinas, this book is very good. The book is somewhat critical of Lincoln and has a somewhat "southern" flavor for that and other reasons, but it is obvious that the author tried to be objective. He often had kind things to say about southern Unionists, for example.
