Book Description

November 22, 2005
The Civil War shaped the development of the United States of America like no other event in the country’s history, resulting in the building of one of the world’s greatest democracies. Published to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the end of the war, this book provides a unique glimpse into the world of the 1860s — the military, political and social events of the war are cxplored, and the heroes, from great leaders and generals to common soldiers and civilians, are identified.

Written by an established expert on the era, The Civil War Experience contains 30 facsimile items, many removable, of rare memorabilia. The reader can relive this defining moment of history through some 200 illustrations, including specially commissioned maps, and by listening to readings of first-hand accounts of the war on an accompanying audio CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the Novice & the Fanatic, but..., December 20, 2005

This review is from: The Civil War Experience: 1861-1865 (Hardcover)
Overall, I found this to be a very good book. I am a Civil War fanatic, with over 1600 volumes in my collection, but I'm glad to have this addition to my library. The reading level is fine for teens and advanced pre-teens, as well as adults. This would make an excellent gift for anyone who likes the Civil War. The attachments and inserts are what makes this book so appealing to me. I would have rated it 5 stars, except there is a disappointing mistake with one of the attachments. One of the attachments is labeled as a map of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, but when I unfolded the large map, I found it to be a map of northern Georgia! I hope that all of the copies of this book do not have the same error, but I imagine they do, as there are no other fold-out map attachments in the book.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is a wonderful introduction to the Civil War -- and so much more.

Numerous removable inserts are included along the way: replicas of telegrams, letters, orders, maps, newspaper articles, Gettysburg Address, surrender document, etc. There is also a 70-minute audio CD, well-narrated and including actors reading some of the participants' own words. There is an excellent mix of familiar photos and many unfamiliar ones. This coffee-table size book comes in an attractive and sturdy slip case.

Congratulations to Mr. Wertz for providing such a terrific book. I own several dozen books on the Civil War, but if I could only own five, this would be one of them. This belongs in every library and school.

This 'book' is an amazing tale of the civil war. It has pull out sections that makes you feel like you have original documents to look at from over 100 years ago. It has a huge wealth of information as well as an audio cd with info too. If you are a civil war fan this is a great book to add to your collection and a great price at amazon!!
