Though the battle ended in a draw, it spelled the end of the era of wooden fighting ships. The Gray Ghost: John Singleton Mosby: The 125-pound "Gray Ghost" of the Confederacy was given full authority to operate his 800 men without interference from ranking officers. The result was the development of guerilla warfare and an extension of the war for six months.
