5.0 out of 5 stars Gettysburg and Vicksburg, October 20, 2008
This review is from: Civil War, Ken Burn's Episode 5: The Universe Of Battle 1863 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The fifth installment of Ken Burns' Civil War series deals primarily (along with Burns' masterful retelling of personal moments and readings of old letters from the period) with these areas:

-The Battle of Gettysburg, which proved to (while not ending the war by a long shot) be the tide-turning moment for the Union army over the Confederates. The loss of life at that single, three-day battle is almost unimaginable.

-The Battle of Vicksburg, where Union forces under the command of U.S. Grant finally took the key Confederate city and moved ever closer to the military stronghold of Georgia.

-The introduction of many black soldiers into the Union army, once of the big reasons why the Union ranks always outnumbered the Confederates. Although the Civil Rights movement wasn't even on the horizon at that time, the opportunity for blacks to fight against their oppressors was at the very least a step in the right direction of equality.

-Finally, this video ends with a re-reading of President Abraham Lincoln's powerful Gettysburg Address, commemorating the soldiers that had perished on that battle field and inspiring the Northern army to not let those deaths be in vain.
