Well-Timed Victories Save Lincoln,
By Zachary Koenig "K-Dawg" (Forest Lake, MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Civil War, Ken Burn's Episode 7: Most Hallowed Ground 1864 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The seventh installment of Ken Burns' Civil War series focuses on these key areas (in addition to the personal letters and recollections that are a staple of his programs):-With General U.S. Grant's forces laying a heavy siege on Richmond and General Sherman slowly fighting his way toward Georgia, the Union finds itself in real danger of losing support for the war before it can be finished. -In Washington, Abraham Lincoln's 1864 re-inauguration seems to be an impossibility, as George McClellan (the one-time leader of the entire Union army who now heads the anti-war movement) provides a strong ticket in opposition. -As 1864 comes to a close, though, key victories for Sherman's army and the doggedness of Grant finally pay off, as the Union cause gains enough support to keep Lincoln in office, all but securing a Northern victory over the South. -Finally, even in the face of sure defeat, Southern president Jefferson Davis refuses to surrender, instead choosing to fight to the last man. |
