5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Makes me cry every time I hear it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Civil War Concept Album : A disaster!!!
This album does not really give you a snap shot of the forthcoming musical. I was disppointed when I heard the album. I don't understand why they call this Nashville Session, a "supposedly" country music concept album of Civil War, yet they have Linda Eder and some singers, who were not a country music singer. This album is just a cheesy water down version of...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Makes me cry every time I hear it!, October 4, 1998

This review is from: The Civil War: The Nashville Sessions (1998 Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
I was fortunate enough to see the performance of this breathtaking show before its presentation in New York. Unfortunately, this is not the complete sound track of the show. Some of the songs that I liked the most from the production ("Five Boys," "Bound for Glory," "By the Sword," "Greenback," "Candle in the Window") are not on this recording. But, what IS on the CD is spellbinding. I can't listen to it without "clouding up." I LOVE this CD and I play it all the time, and I'm waiting impatiently for the "Original Cast Sound Track" to come out. The only cast member to sing on this CD is the incomparable Linda Eder --- WOW!! Her rendition of "I Never Knew His Name" is powerful! The other artists do a terrific job with this original score. I especially like "This Old Gray Coat," which, for some reason, is NOT sung in the performance. Pity --- but it makes me glad I bought the CD. I love it. It has everything --- foot stomping music, sing along music, cloud up and cry music --- it's all there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotion; passion; goosebumps!, February 18, 1999

This review is from: The Civil War: The Nashville Sessions (1998 Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
This CD evokes total passion and emotion. One does not have to be a lover of the Civil War to appreciate it, just a lover of freedom and America. The melodies are somber yet hopeful; the lyrics are simple yet genuine. Mental images will flash through your mind as you listen to the music of the great conflict. You are left sad, but uplifted. Buy this CD and be exposed to the very worst and the very best of America. Musically, you will be exposed to the very best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Music worth listening to over and over!, November 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Civil War: The Nashville Sessions (1998 Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
I was fortunate to hear the music first and then see the perfomance in a recent visit to Houston. The cast performance was as good or better than the Nashville session. Not only is Linda Eder on both the CD and a member of the cast, Gene Miller who sings "Virginia" was also a cast member in the performance I saw and has a phenomenal voice. This music was so enjoyable that after only listening one time it felt familiar-- like an old favorite song! Highly Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing CD, November 11, 2005
This review is from: The Civil War: The Nashville Sessions (1998 Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
I haven't seen the show, but I heard the song "The Day the Sun Stood Still" and I had to buy the CD. Even if you don't like Country music, I highly recommend it. The music is absolutely wonderful.

My favorite tracks are "The Day the Sun Stood Still," "Virginia," "Old Gray Coat," "Judgement Day," "Regimental Drummer," and "Last Waltz for Dixie."

If you've never listened to country music, this is a great way to introduce yourself to the genre. This album is filled with great proformances by a variety of singers. My favorite songs are by Linda Eder, not a country star but a wonderful singer from Broadway. Her two songs on this album are very touching. This is a great listen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Frank Wildhorn is simply a gift to us. Another winner., February 26, 1999

A change of pace from Jeckyl/Hyde and Pimpernal. Definitely American with a country feel. Powerful lyrics. The kind of music that improves with each listening; will probably sound better time 51 than time 50.

I don't understand why they call this Nashville Session, a "supposedly" country music concept album of Civil War, yet they have Linda Eder and some singers, who were not a country music singer. This album is just a cheesy water down version of another Concept Album of Civil War (2-dics)"The Complete Music of Civil War". Definitely Frank Wildhorn is unreputable the king of concept album. I think he'd better off composing pop music for pop stars like Celine Dion and Barbara Streisand, rather than being on Broadway......

The only problem with this CD is that the play was better! Saw the play in Houston 3 times! I thought it was wonderful. Am not sure why it was not a wonderful hit in New York. Maybe they don't realize the pain and soul in the play!

I saw this musical in June 2010 at the Flat Rock Playhouse in Flat Rock, NC. The musical I saw was titled For the Glory, a Civil War musical. It was sensational. I bought this CD immediately afterward so that I could continue to enjoy some of the greatest stage songs I have ever heard. But I was disappointed in the CD as it did not include much of the music I heard. If someone has not experienced the version I saw, this CD is enjoyable. But if one has seen the For the Glory version of the play the listener will be disappointed.
