Review of The Civil War A New View in Close-up 3-D.,
By Bobbi L. Starwalt (Ottawa, Illinois United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Civil War: A New View in Close-up 3-D (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. This book explores the Civil War from many different angles. Most Civil War books relay information on the battles and the famous people who were in them. This book goes beyond the traditional information and explores personal notes, living conditions, and various military weapons and vessels. It contains the most wonderful 3-D graphics to further depict and tell information. I really enjoyed this book, and would suggest it. I only wish it longer!

I bought this for my 12 yo son and he absolutely loves this book. He looks at it often and the information is good. The 3-D portions make it fun and interesting.

Good Teacher's Aid,

I am a 5th grade teacher that teaches the Civil War. This book is awesome in demonstrating the different facets of the Civil War that are hard to comprehend today. The pop-up aspect of the book is especially intriguing. The kids were actually mesmerized when they were able to see the excellent way the author put the book together. It takes a lot to mesmerize kids in 2006 unless it is on their video game. This book is great!

I just happened to find this book while I was reading Stephen Sears's "Gettysburg." The 3-D map of the Gettysburg battlefield on the last page of this book helped me to understand the importance of terrain in this battle. Unlike the traditional paper map you find in most books about the war, in Frey's book you can literally run your finger across the terrain and feel the high rise of Round Top and the low ground around the angle where Picketts' Charge took place. This 3-D map helps you to understand why Lee chose to attack that topographically shallow point of Cemetary Ridge. This book is invaluable. I wish Frey would do an entire book of these 3-D maps of various Civil War battlefields. I also liked the other 3-D displays as well. I recomend this book to everyone: child and adult alike.
