This book is great!, January 25, 2011
This review is from: Civil War Sewing Circle, The: Quilts and Sewing Accessories Inspired by the Era (That Patchwork Place) (Paperback)
I received my copy of Kathleen's book yesterday and was unable to look through it until midnight. After "taking a moment to glance through it just a tiny bit", when I looked back at the clock I found it was already 1:00am. I had "been lost" in this book for an hour!!! Now that tells you what a great book this is for as tired as I was, I could not put it down. I can't wait until I can get back to this book today. It has great historical information & pictures, great quilt patterns (!!!!!), wonderful printing and layout -- good color throughout which helps those of us who look for guidance in color choices for our quilts, just an all around fabulous book. Buy it, you won't be sorry!!! Carol in Mid-Mich :))

No full size quilts here!, February 8, 2011
This review is from: Civil War Sewing Circle, The: Quilts and Sewing Accessories Inspired by the Era (That Patchwork Place) (Paperback)
I found this book to be attractive and well-designed, as did other reviewers, and I enjoyed the historical perspectives and extracts from letters of the time. (I love it when there is actually something to read in a quilt pattern book!) However, I wish the title had included the phrase "doll quilts," as the majority of patterns given are for very small quilts. Out of 16 patterns, there was only one that came close to being a bed-sized quilt, the "Soldier's Cot Quilt," and even that one is smaller than a contemporary twin. Three others approached the size of throws. But the meat and potatoes of the book is nine quilts of 36" x 36" or considerable smaller. Three patterns for accessories (such as a pincushion) round our the collection. The small quilt patterns do not really translate into larger sizes--simple small-scale block designs that are charming in miniature do not necessarily work in a larger version. Ultimately, the quilts are cute but not what I had expected. If you are interested in doll quilts and miniature quilts of the 1800's, this book is wonderful. But if you were hoping to see the bed quilts the people made and used in the 1800's, you will not find them here!

An amazing blend of history and creativity!, January 31, 2011
This review is from: Civil War Sewing Circle, The: Quilts and Sewing Accessories Inspired by the Era (That Patchwork Place) (Paperback)
The Civil War Sewing Circle, by Kathleen Tracy, is an amazing blend of history and creativity. My twin passions are quilting and genealogy, so when I first heard about this book I was quite excited. Tracy has done a beautiful job of blending the activities, particularly of women, during the Civil War with letters from the war, and quilts which are appropriate for the time period. The book is also filled with historical photos of women, families and soldiers. The quilts themselves were created using beautiful reproduction fabrics which give them a historic feeling. They range from small baby quilts like "Civil War Stars Doll Quilt", to quilts like "Soldier's Cot Quilt" which is a reproduction of a quilt used during the Civil War, to small quilted projects such as "Civil War Letter Packet". Tracy's quilts are lovely, with clearly written directions. Tracy encourages readers to consider using reproduction fabrics, but also branch out and consider making a traditional quilt with modern fabric. Civil War Sewing Circle is definitely a book worth owning! Karin Renaud Author, Quilts from the Heart
