Good survey; Repetitive in parts. The focus is almost entirely on Washington, D.C. And Virginia area which is understandable but neglects other parts of the country and their connections to the war. In particular for example they could have written about Beaufort and Port Royal South Carolina which was controlled by Union forces from late 1861 and inhabited by businessmen from New York and Boston who engaged in active commerce throughout the entire war.

The 1st South Carolina Volunteers at Beaufort composed entirely of former slaves, was the first all black unit of the Union Army in the Civil War. The former slaves were abandoned by their owners fleeing from the Union Army invaders.

I was expecting yet another Civil War book when I ordered this, but I found the range and variety of chapters and subjects to be really interesting. Personalities like Miegs are buried in history, his contributions were awesome, the tales of the man in the box when Lincoln was shot, Washington, DC before the war and how it changed, all things that I found very interesting. If you are at all in history, and particularly the Civil War, this is a very enjoyable read.

There are some very interesting chapters and some that are not. Uneven style and level of writing. The Kindle version is very difficult to navigate, as there is no table of contents or other aids to see what is contained apart from a page-by-page search.

These stories are compelling and mesmerizing, varied and haunting. Descriptions of photos of nameless solders who were so young, their uniforms were too big; of a black soldier and his family; of a little girl holding a photo of her father who died in the war, leave imprints on heart and mind. Some stories overlapped giving a three dimensional view of events and personalities. A dissenting view of Mclellan (sp.) was especially enjoyable when I'd only heard disparaging stories before. My only complaint is that the stories are too short! SJP

I don't consider myself an expert but think I know quite a bit and this book kept me glued to it day after day. I only have time to read in the mornings and at night so had to read it a little at a time. Lots of GREAT information, altho I wish there was more information for first timers with this type of book because I'm not even sure I closed the book out right.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the collected articles on the Civil War done by the Post staff. Their engagement and enthusiasm for the project and the resulting stories is apparent.
