The diaries were a very unique find. I was particularly interested because my Great Great Great Grandfather was in the same regiment and suffered a similar fate as the soldier in the book. The book gives a realistic story of what life was like in the middle eighteenth century in midwest America faced with a Civil War.

While a Civil War buff would be in heaven, even a general reader, such as myself, would be caught up in this work. It is well-researched, so the journal of the Civil War P.O.W. that is its subject is enriched and supported by a wealth of resource material. I started out skimming the book, daunted by the abundant details, but found myself engaged here and there, and eventually enjoying the reading so much that I finally realized I had better just get back to the start and dig in. Highly recommended.
