5.0 out of 5 stars Great new maps! May 23, 2013

I love the idea of having maps based on real-world locations, so this map pack fulfilled my desires. However, the real gems are the continents plus and pangea plus maps. These maps are excellent, and like their description says, revamps strategic city-state placement and creates island chains for city states. Better than regular continents and pangea any day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game September 2, 2012
I've been playing Civ5, with Gods & Kings, and the Explorer's expansion for a couple of weeks. My platform is a stock Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q8102 laptop, with 4Gb RAM and Nvidia M460 graphics. All drivers are up to date, and I've optimized the machine for gaming (read: stripped out all unnecessary software applications, dumbed down Windows to the Classic view to reduce memory overhead, and I've eliminated all nonvital background processes). That said, I've experienced no difficulties whatsoever running Civ5.

My Civ5 preference runs to marathon proportions, meaning my games often run to over 2,000 turns. At no time have I experienced game slowdown or loss of graphics quality.

Mind you, I'm not now, nor have I ever been a computer professional; rather, I'm a 62-year-old retired History teacher. So, having read a number of reviews, here and elsewhere, criticizing Civ5's performance, I'm convinced the problem is with players' PC setup and not the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Maps January 8, 2013

Enjoyable throughout. Well done by the company. A very nice add-on to a very playable game. I would have liked to see more created maps rather than random map spreads.

I'm a sid meiers junkie and have played pretty much all of his games since Civ1 and was in love with all of them up to this game at which point I'm just now disappointed with what his studious put out.

The game play itself is really great and the graphics are awesome. It's too bad that after 30-50 turns the game becomes unplayable due to performance and you'll never get to actually finish a game that you start.

People will argue that Steam isn't DRM but that's exactly what it is. I have the game on CD with the expansion. I can't install them though because steam doesn't work right. The game won't install while Steam is offline, so why do I have a disc? I don't know. When I go online, steam won't connect because either their servers are down or windows firewall blocks something (although I doubt that since I turned it off, but that's what steam says). People who pirated the game are playing it right now, probably reading this post and laughing because their copies just work and they didn't pay $50 for the first DVD and $50 for the expansion like I did. Of course the joke is on everyone because the game runs slow even on higher end systems. I have a friend running a PC with 32GB of RAM and two NVIDIA 680's in SLI with a 256GB SSD and even on that beast of a machine the game crawls to a screaching halt of performance after about 40 turns. The farm graphics disappear completely from the screen so knowing what is built on a tile requires you to hit F10 to see what's actually there or to hover the mouse over each tile until you find something that you haven't built on.

Summary: Good game made bad by Steam DRM and poor coding.
