5.0 out of 5 stars The inside scoop to Florence
This little book made the difference between a great trip to Florence and an "off-the-charts" fabulous adventure. It's filled with descriptions of tiny shops of every imaginable kind that you might never find on your own -- the best of the best, unique items, real craftsmen. There's 90 year old glove shop where they simply take one look at your hand, immediately know...

We bought this little book for our recent visit to Florence and found it of little use, and we are shoppers! It is poorly organized, so that it does not help you as you traverse a complicated city. Also its selections seem very arbitrary and certainly emphasize the high-end shops. Those looking for bargains, or even good deals will be disappointed. Too bad - the idea of a...

This little book made the difference between a great trip to Florence and an "off-the-charts" fabulous adventure. It's filled with descriptions of tiny shops of every imaginable kind that you might never find on your own -- the best of the best, unique items, real craftsmen. There's 90 year old glove shop where they simply take one look at your hand, immediately know your size and can make the perfect recommendation (and they did!) We met a 3rd generation leather craftsman who makes exquisite polished boxes and other items, and just as the book described, he works alone, and is more that happy to stop his work, greet guests and tell them all about his work. Every restaurant that we went to listed in this book was out of this world, and didn't break the bank. Oh, and Grom gelato is reason enough to hop a plane right this minute. This book got us off the tourist track and into a wonderful world we might have otherwise missed. Literally 4 inches square, the book fits into any civilized purse or jacket pocket. I don't even like to shop, and this book made be excited to get out of bed (despite the jet lag) and see as much as I could see. If you've been to Florence before, then this is the ONLY guidebook you'll need on your return trip. The author has apparently written a companion book on Rome. I can't wait for her to take on other great cities of the world. Ciao!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bellisima!, March 30, 2008
This review is from: The Civilized Shopper's Guide to Florence (Paperback)
Makes you want to hop on a plane (with a tasteful wallet full of crisp Euros) and explore the art of shopping or even just window shopping in this city with already so much to please the eye. A lovely guide with just the right tone of voice and beautiful images. The handsome package and handy size make it a must-have for a stay of any length in Firenze.

5.0 out of 5 stars a brilliant find, May 18, 2010

This book is brilliant in both its idea and execution. As someone who is familiar with Florence, it found and highlighted many craftsmen, boutiques and shops I had never even heard of- even though some have been there for generations. Florence is known for its great artistic talent, and the best of this tradition shows up in these pages. You can almost treat this book as an additional museum guide!

I just returned from Florece. It was my fourth trip. With this charming little book in hand, I found sme wonderful gems of places to visit which I did not know about This book is a must for added fun in Florence. I will give it as a gift to friends who are traveling to Florence and hope for a volume 2. The size is perfect, the photos great, the recommendations very appreciated, and the cover very much in keeping with thevwonderful feeling of Florence. I an anxious to go back.

Also its selections seem very arbitrary and certainly emphasize the high-end shops. Those looking for bargains, or even good deals will be disappointed. Too bad - the idea of a list of some very cool and unusual shops in Florence is a good one.

I wish I had had this book in hand the first time I visited Florence. This guide lists everything from art supplies to vintage clothing, organized by walks and located on tiny maps. On my next trip this tiny volume will be in my carry-on baggage--I don't want to risk its not getting off the plane with me. I wish there were volumes for Venice, Edinburgh, London, and all my other favorite cities. The Civilized Shopper's Guide is a treasure of a book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't go to Florence without this book!, August 17, 2009
This review is from: The Civilized Shopper's Guide to Florence (Paperback)
Before my trip to Florence last November, I read this little gem and highlighted all the places I wanted to find, hoping they'd live up to the hype. I couldn't have been more pleased! We felt as if we were on a scavenger hunt, searching the off-the-beaten-path streets for the very best shops, restaurants, etc. We definitely would not have found them without this handy little book. I just ordered The Civilized Shopper's Guide to Rome, and I can't wait to use it when I visit in the fall. You won't be sorry you bought this book!

Brilliant! I have been living near Florence for 2 years and go very frequently to Florence. I bought this guide out of curiosity - most of the places I didn't know. I've gone back to Florence and done the walks - absolutely wonderful places! Worth every cent. Just don't go to Florence without it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Indulgent read, March 7, 2010

I bought this book. It was moderately interesting, but when I was in Florence it wasn't much use to the average tourist because it described a limited number of very specialised, and very expensive shops. If I had unlimited funds and was intending to live in Florence it might have had some useful information, but it wasn't worth the money to me.

It is a charming LITTLE book that brought me back to Florence.

Excellent information.

Little books are delightful, but this one could be a little larger.
