Now make no mistake, horehound candy (what an unfortunate name), is strictly an acquired taste. I have given them to my grandsons over the years and, to put it mildly, they are not impressed! I truly feel if they would give them a chance, they would become addicted too...oh well.
Now there is horehound candy and there is horehound candy. These small drops by Claey are NOT as strong as some of those I ate 60 some odd years ago. The strength varies from band to brand, and if you want to be truthful, from batch to batch. These Claeys are a bit milder that some of the old time candies. It all boils down to personal taste. At this time in my life I like this milder version. I purchased another brand a few years ago (For the life of me I cannot remember what it was) and it was more like the taste of the ones I had when I was a kid. To be quite frank they overwhelmed me.
We of course use these for cough drops and sore and dry throats. They are quite effective. I also just like to set around and suck on them when I have a craving for candy.
Again, it is purely a matter of personal taste here, but these fit my needs perfectly. Give them a try. You may not like the taste of horehound candy at first but over time....well, I am guessing you will become quite fond of them.
8 oz. Wild Turkey 101 Proof Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey
8 oz. Claey's Horehound - keep stirring above two ingredients until horehound dissolves
4 oz. Lemon Juice (I used reconstituted)
4 oz. or more Clover Honey (don't use 'pure honey' as the bees have been sugar-fed and the antibiotic effect is greatly reduced)
A couple teaspoons every four hours as needed should do the trick. Watch it! You don't want a DUI ! Store in glass containers in fridge. Long expiration date.
Claeys never was the BEST brand, the horehound flavor isn't all that strong, but it survived when many other sources of horehound candy bit the dust.
Unfortunately, this is not the second batch I've got which not only have near zero horehound flavor, but should have been dumped as bad. The pieces are all malformed and full of air bubbles, come quickly apart in the mouth into granular sugar and shards, and are just not very good. About half of them are spit-into-the-sink bad.
I'm sure Amazon would give me a refund, but life is short. I'm gonna eat the loss, so to speak, and never order a Claeys product again.
Its all sugar (not that I did not expect sugar) and no flavor .
And, now I am stuck with 12 packages and I could not even give away the open package.

I love these things. They remind me of my childhood and my father every time I have one. They sooth your throat without that medicine type taste. Read morePublished 3 months ago by DMagee
