Book Description

August 1995
A practical, easy to read, easy to understand guide for anyone with an insurance claim to gather the necessary information, place a value on the claim and present the information to an insurance company representative in a compelling and convincing way. The book explains why, in most cases, a lawyer is not needed to collect insurance money. Included are discussions of bodily injuries, damage to cars, what information is needed to convince an insurance adjuster of the value of the claim and methods of negotiating for the best recovery possible. The best part is that people following these methods then get to keep all the money for themselves instead of sharing up to one-half of it with a lawyer. The book even covers relationships with lawyers, if one has already been hired.

Review

Dear Gordon: I wanted to take a moment and write you a thank you letter for allowing me to review your book CLAIMS How To Collect Insurance Money Without A Lawyer. It was easy to read and easy to understand. I figure that your book saved me $10,500! As you are aware, I am a licensed insurance agent in the State of Texas. Though I sell quite a lot of auto insurance, I have had little experience with being on the receiving end of a claim. Recently, my wife was injured in an auto accident. Her back was broken and my vehicle was totaled. The other party was at fault and I came very close to calling one of the many lawyers who solicited our case. However, because of my occupation, I was hesitant to involve a lawyer. I can recall many instances in which one of my clients used the services of a personal injury lawyer to collect on a PIP or Uninsured Motorist Claim only to end up paying 30% of the claim money to the lawyer! It was especially disheartening because as the agent who sold the insurance, I was aware that the company was going to pay policy limits for the claim anyway. From my point of view, my client paid a lawyer 30% for nothing.

I used the techniques in your book to organize my case and make my own claim. Under our PIP coverage my company paid my wife's injuries up to the limits of coverage ($10,000). The insurance company for the party at fault in the accident paid us their policy limits for bodily injury ($20,000) and they settled with me on my vehicle for $5,000. A lawyer could not have gotten me any more money because there wasn't anymore to get! Once an insurance company pays the policy limits on a policy, they are done. With the help of a lawyer, I estimate that my wife and I might have collected $24,500. Instead, (with the help of your book) we collected $35,000!

Thank you, Gordon. I think that everyone should at least read your book before making the decision to hire an attorney. Sincerely, D.F., Humble, Texas -- D.F., Humble, Texas

From the Publisher

For those stuck between the rock and the hard place of having been injured by someone else and who must choose between being pushed around by the insurance industry or sharing the proceeds of their claim settlement with a lawyer, Claims: How To Collect Insurance Money Without A Lawyer provides the way out. It shows how to handle your own claim and keep all of the money for yourself. Basic rules for investigation, recording and preserving information are only the beginning of what the book teaches. Included are guides for determining the value of a claim as well as how to negotiate the settlement and in a funny and friendly way presents tips for such things as how to behave and how to deal with the insurance adjuster. Most important is the explanation of why it is better to do it yourself than to pay someone else to do it for you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough info. on injury claims., June 2, 2001

Mr. Smith gives good information on how to negotiate for the best car claim, but he is very misleading on how to settle a personal injury claim. He also is very biased for the insurance industry and only tries to steer you toward a small claim. If you want to know about a personal injury claim, this book in't for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title and Nothing New Under the Sun, August 25, 1999
This review is from: Claims: How To Collect Insurance Money Without A Lawyer (Paperback)
The publicity blurb made me think this book would help with a homeowner claim. There was nothing in the book but discussion about car accident claims. It was a complete waste of my money and time. The author rambled and repeated himself a lot. If he had been more concise and organized the book could have been written in 20 pages instead of 170. I am sorely disappointed, and would have been even if I had been looking for info on car accident claims.

Good if you need a "cheerleader". There are no forms or checklists to help you with your task so you are still on your own. Wording the claim letter is the big task and this book provides no help.
