I had never read anything by Bonnie Blythe, but I bought the Kindle book because the reviews were good and I enjoy light, Christian romance. This book is lots of fun for a quick, light-hearted read that will have you laughing out loud! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!!!Claire's Not-So-Gothic RomanceClaire's Not-So-Gothic Romance

Funniest First Chapter I've Ever Read!,

This review is from: Claire's Not-So-Gothic Romance (Paperback)
Sometimes you just need a good laugh, and with Claire's Not-So-Gothic Romance, author Bonnie Blythe delivers the laugh-out-loud variety. Claire Parnell is such a quirky heroine, you can't help but love her. After a mishap on the job, Claire ends up in the Emergency Room. Woozy from pain meds, she assumes she's about to die. Desperately hoping for one last chance at love before she dies, she spots a handsome doctor, grabs him by the neck of his scrubs and smacks him with a kiss right before she passes out. This is the FUNNIEST first chapter of any book I've ever read, hands down. Between Claire's drama queen antics and those of her weird, matchmaking mother, it's a wonder she gets a second chance with Sam Murray, the male nurse she mistook for a doctor. Throw in a few other wacky characters and you've got such a hilarious story, it could easily be a hit romantic comedy movie. Don't miss this one!

So 1st off, I was thinking "Goth" not "Gothic" when I saw the title of this book. This is NOT about an EMO girl who dresses in black all the time. ;-) It means Gothic as in Emily Bronte time period. :)
Most romance books out there are about couples who keep avoiding each other (either one thinks they're unworthy of the other, or they've been hurt by the other, etc) leaving a small amount of butterflies-in-the-belly romance until the very end. And there's nothing wrong with that. But sometimes you want a book that gushes romances from the start. And THIS book does that. Sam actually pursues Claire in this book and it is absolutely delightful!! This book is written in 1st person. Sometimes I'm not a fan of that writing style only because you don't know what the other character is thinking- but this book is so well written you know exactly what Sam is thinking! Even though you're hearing that Claire thinks she's so unworthy of such a gorgeous guy, you also see that Sam is very forward in his affections for her. That is what made me LOVE this book! If anything you have to read this so you'll expand your vocabulary. I'll admit- I had to look up words in the dictionary a couple times. Never has chick-lit been so educational! ;-) This has become one of my ALL-TIME favorite books!!! I know I'll read it over and over. It's a MUST READ!

this book was a great read. It had everything i enjoy in a chick-lit; a main character to root for, funny moments, obstacles to overcome, relate-able, and clean. I'm glad I took a chance to give this author a chance, i encourage you to do the same, you will not be disappointed.

Claire Parnell has always equated herself with Jane Eyre, being of the "plain" variety of women. Her eccentric mother has decreed that Claire should marry a doctor and settle for nothing less, but it's not like Claire has even had a chance to "settle". When she wakes up at the hospital with a foggy brain, Claire frantically believes she's dying and decides her last act will show her mother she at least "tried" to honor her wishes. Impulsively kissing the first doctor that approaches her bedside--and watching him back away horrified--she soon finds out death is actually not in the foreseeable future. (Unless you count death by humiliation.) Oh, and the doctor she kissed? He was actually only a nurse. Let the humiliation, and this enjoyable story, begin!
My thoughts: This book was an absolute blast to read! Claire is such a real character, I could totally relate to her. I loved how she acted when Sam (the nurse) kept showing up everywhere, her actions were so realistic and humorous. Claire's eccentric mother is completely strange and adds tons of awkward humor. Sam was also a great character, his relentless pursuit of Claire was very charming. It was cool to see that such a nice guy can come from a rough background. Being a fan of Gothic romance novels, Claire has a very wide vocabulary and often uses large and obscure words to convey her feelings--both in her speech and also in her thoughts. It took me about the length of the first chapter to get accustomed to her "voice" and use of such words... by that point I had gotten so sucked into the story that it no longer mattered. Some of the words gave me a chance to use the dictionary feature on my kindle, which always makes me feel rather cool. :) Though a totally fun and light-hearted read, there are some tougher issues tackled here as well, such as a Christian dating a new believer with a past that's not so pure. This is something I haven't seen a ton of in Christian fiction, but I have to applaud the author for her delicate and appropriate handling of the issues. There were several twists that caught me off guard and left me saying "Really!?", but it kept things fresh and several times had me staying up way too late to read "just a little more!" This is the first book by Bonnie Blythe that I've read, and I have to say I'm impressed. If you're a fan of Christian chick-lit/romance, do yourself a favor and check this one out. It's just too fun of a story to let slip by!

This book is great!! As a devout Christian women and a sucker for (clean)romance, I've been having a really hard time lately finding books that are not rated R, that I enjoy reading and actually finish. I couldnt put this one down, read it in one sitting. The writing was great, the characters were well developed. Jane Eyre happens to be one of my favorite classic novels so it was very fun to have it be such an integral part of the story and Clair's character. It is so true how reading classic novels has one talking in old english for quiet a while LOL. Worth the $.99...I would have paid way more to read this one! If anyone has any good read recommendations similar to this story let me know, thanks!

I had alot of fun reading this book! Claire Parnell was such a fun girl to read about. I was smiling or laughing through most of this story! Claire is 24 and living at home with her Mom, who has a one track mind and that is so see her daughter find and marry a doctor. Enter Sam (a nurse), who Claire first meets lying in the hospital and greets with a kiss. You really have to read the book to see how that all came about. Sam ends up being a new neighbor and the interaction between Sam, Claire and the rest of the characters is really quite amusing. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Funny and Touching,

Claire is an everyday girl who is of the opinion that she's not really worthy of the love of a good man or any man really. Sam is new in town having just moved away from a past he would rather forget. They first meet in the ER when Claire has an accident with a skateboard and Sam is the ER nurse that's on duty. When she thinks she's dying and thinks he's a doctor (hilarious scene) she reaches up, grabs Sam's shirt and kisses him full on the lips trying to fulfill her mother's wish for her to meet a doctor. She is horrified when she sees Sam standing in the church lobby as memories of the ER assault her. How could she face him again? Besides a good looking specimen like Sam would never be interested in her. As Sam pursues her she finds herself loving the attention and maybe dreaming just a little of what life would be like with a man like Sam. But what happens when Sam's past blows into town?
I thoroughly enjoyed Claire's Not So Gothic Romance! Bonnie's writing was crisp and the zippy dialog kept me turning pages. Claire was easy to identify with and Sam, well who couldn't fall in love with Sam! The story was both funny and touching. It's one you won't want to miss. |
